Team 6 - Team Ohana - Check in and introduce!

I have not done a 50K yet, but I'm considering a 50K trail run in March.

My only concern is distance training. Since I did not run the full Breast Cancer marathon last week, my last long run was the Goofy.

Any thoughts if that is enough or if I should get a good long run in before the 50K?

:worship: :worship: :worship:

What else can I say?! :woohoo:
Maria

IMHO I would do a LR b/4 to see how your body handles it....oh wait, did you say you did a marathon last week? If so, I would do a shorter LR b/4 to practice the eating. I know all my ultra running buddies walk ALL the up hills...even the little ones. They also say you should NEVER get out of breath. It is a different kind of running. Even though a 50k is just a few more miles than a marathon...it is an ultra so you could do it and take it easy.....Also, do you normally run on trails. Trails are a whole different ballgame. I normally run on pavement but did a marathon 2 years ago on some kinda technical trails. Now that was different...but fun. I did not look up the whole run...was jumping over roots and climbing over trees....and sliding down mud banks (it was raining) But I did recover faster b/c of the soft ground I was running on.

Jen - If you are on the fence about a skirt, get one...but not from Target...I got mine from www.Skirtsports.com. I have the Marathon girl and that has the running panties in it....but they have ones with the compression shorts called the gymgirl. My sister and Bree has the Gym Girl and LOVE it....I did the Charlotte marathon in my skirt and Bree did WDW this year in hers. They work great...even in the heat.

Maria - 10 miles in 37 min is GREAT! You were SMOKE'N!

Nancy - Pilates huh....I am so glad that is working for you. I love pilates, but never take time to do it. But I know I need to.

Debra - WOW on going to WDW! You DOOD is such a wonderful and thoughtful DUDE.:rotfl:

These are the races I am THINKING about this year....I say THINKING b/c nothing is really never set in stone for me.1. April 12th 1/2 marathon with my sister..we are training for this now
2. March 29th Sprint Tri (I am signed up for this one)
3. Grandfather Mountain Marathon July 12th...but may be out of town
4. Sept something, the MS Century Ride I did last year.
5. Nov 29th (I think) Derby 50k
6. March 8th 1/2 marathon but not sure...$$$$$:scared1:

What is everyone else thinking about doing?

Hi Team-Ohana...Sorry to keep sneaking into your thread but your discussions are always good ones. :thumbsup2 I hope you guys don't mind me stopping by here...it's not for trash-talking or any other intentions aside from friendly chat LOL!

Christa: Are you going to use the SkirtSports stuff for your sprint tri? I was looking at their products (the transition girl, etc) and I'm thinking of trying them out for my tri this summer. If you do get the bike skirt PLEASE post a review on here somewhere lol....I've been looking at those too but haven't made the leap to buy one. It's almost bike weather here in the north (wishful thinking ;) ) but anyway...I'm looking for some new gear and those bike skirts are calling to me. Thought they'd be cute in spin class too LOL!

Debra:  Awesome news about the b-day trip :)

Nancy: PILATES saved my running habit from becoming extinct. I have bad hips...but I actually rehabbed a hip injury with pilates and it was the miracle I needed a few years ago. I'm so glad it's working for you. I tell my clients all the time to stick with it and you'll see results...especially my runner clients. :thumbsup2

Anyway..you guys are doing awesome. :) Have a great weekend...and thanks for all the inspiration! :goodvibes

I did 40 minutes on the TM last night. I was doing some speed work, and after 20 minutes I wasn't feeling so hot. So cranked the speed down to normal and just jogged. I felt like I was going SOOOOO SLOW! Tonight I am going to try to make it to BootCamp. I haven't been there since before the marathon.

Christa - I have one from Target... need I say more. My b-day is in May along with Mothers Day. I think I know what I am asking for!!!

Guess what I did last night!!!! I finally signed up for the WDW 1/2. Man, it's almost full!!! The registration was acting funky and my confirmation email just showed I bought a pin. So we'll see if I am actually signed up. After the full last year, I decided to work on speed and get a nice PR. Well actually for my 1/2 in May I want a PR also. I guess I better get working on that!

I would agree about trails.

I have done over 40 50K or greater distance races(including 20+ 50 milers or longer). I felt much better after a trail 50 miler than a road marathon. Legs like the softer terrain. As mentioned, only the lead runner runs the hills. Being a great power walker, I would pass many people in ultras. I especially liked courses where we would have 4 mile hills. It would take runners many miles to catch up to me on the downhills.

A 50K is a easy jump from the marathon. Just expect to be a little tired but you will be fine. The jump from 50K to 50 miles is the tough one. My first I thought I would never make it. 19 extra miles is a lot and you really have to have a high base mileage and long runs. I used 50K's as my long runs.

Good luck in March.

I posted a long post and the computer kicked me off. I'm teaching a course at nursing competencies today and though I could browse the DIS between groups but this stupid HP tablet that we use for work keeps kicking me off.
So am going to make this shorter and maybe can get it sent off.

I've been doing something everyday but I am getting a cold so I think tonight I am just going to rest.

I don't mind donating hours/miles to Lily this week, but I am confused how this is working. From the thread it looks like some people just were running in her honor and others were donating the miles. Do we just subtract that amount from ours and send the information to her team leader? I don't know what team she is on without looking. Or are we as a team going to just donate some miles or hours from our team total. I would be glad to participate just need directions.

Sending now so I don't lose this.

Nancy

Donating miles seemed like a good idea at the time, but now I am confused how to do it. Should I just decrease everyone's total miles by 1/7th (14.28%) to make it fair for the folks who didn't workout on Monday and still give Lily the equivalent of one day. And what about the hours....should we keep them or give 1/7th of those also. Help me, co-captain and teammates! This is nothing new for me.....certain people that know me are fully aware of my tendency to commit first and then decide just how to go about it later. And also, before I go ahead and make an executive decision, is anyone opposed to the idea of donating? Desperately seeking feedback!

I am thinking that we should just deduct what people want to donate. Like Christa wanted to donate her hours for swimming. So maybe when we post our finals tomorrow/Saturday, everyone that wants to donate their time or miles can deduct that from their tally and make a special note of what they are donating to Lily. Then Jeanne, you can post that amount to their team captain.

Does that sound fair?

Hi Ohanas how is everyone doing? Everyone happy and healthy? Looks like you guys are getting your steps in.

Social Panda:hippie:

Jim & Christa: You both rock! I so wanna be like you, when I grow up (and into this whole running thing). If you're ever in the PA area doing one of your events and need a groupie/member of a pit crew, you let me know. I'd love to support you!

Christa & Robert: Thanks for your insights into longer endurance runs. I'm going to pass this information along to DOOD to encourage him. (There was a time I would have just called the whole idea crazy, and now I'm an enabler....:rotfl:)

Christa & Jen: Okay, I'm just going to admit my ignorance. What's the appeal of running skirts? It could be my androgynous nature, but so many women like running skirts and I'm not sure why? They look cute, but is it more than that? Are they cooler? Less chafing? Enquiring minds want to know!

Amy: :wave2: there! Aw, you can trash-talk--you know you wanna! Hey, you're a cool sci-fi chica. In all your spare time,:rolleyes1 do you want to read Orson Scott Card's Ender series with me (in case you haven't already read it)? It comes highly recommended by my Ohana family.

Jen: :woohoo: for signing up for the 1/2 & for 40 TM minutes! You're getting back in the groove, you are!

Robert: 50Ks as LRs? Yipes! :worship:

Nancy: Take it easy so that your developing cold doesn't become something more. :flower3:

Jeanne & Jen: I agree with Jen's idea, if for nothing more than simplicity. Some of our team doesn't check in here regularly & only have the time to post miles/minutes. Sorry--I didn't want to make things complicated. I guess I'm just a troublemaker!

WWDave: Social Panda? Is this the kinder, gentler panda? Hmmm, somehow I'm suspicious....:scratchin

In response to Christa's Question: I'm signed up for the Cleveland 1/2 in May and am trying to get my Pgh SparkTeam to do a couple of local 5Ks. But because of DOOD's and my schedule, family commitments, travels, etc., we tend to wait a long time to sign up for things. *sigh* We haven't even signed up for the Disney marathon yet. DOOD wants to do the Marine Corps. marathon again, but we don't know if we can swing it yet.

I do have an idea for the team, although I don't know if it would work out. It would be really hard for us all to get together and do a race, other than Disney. but I thought it might be fun if we all decided to commit to doing the same race, like the Race for the Cure. Jim's race would count, in my mind, and sort of served as inspiration. Or we could all do a charity race/ride for cancer or other illness. (I know that sounds morbid, but bear with me. I think of doing a charity run as positive.) That way, we could tailor our events and distances for our respective interests, strengths and abilities. Anyway, I thought it would be a neat way of doing a team event together, at least in spirit. What you all think?

Debra - Like the idea of running a race with a cause. We don't have a lot of races in my local area (some 5K's but not too many). I will definately keep my eyes open and do what I can to join in. I already know we don't have a Race for a Cure.

I totally understand! For a while I was a sceptic (SP?). I thought< "Who would want to run in a skirt?"...But then I got one! I LOVE IT! More than cute, b/c I am not cute running...I mean the sweat, snot, red face, stench...ect. MUCH less chafing...or what I call chub rub.:goodvibes I have run everything from a 5k to a marathon...speed work to hills..and I love it. But get it from skirtsport b/c that is the only one I have tried.
Hey! I love your idea...can I count my MS Ride?

Amy - Come on in here anytime. We love you girl! I dont think I will use the transition girl for my tris. Maybe for a 1/2 IM but for a sprint, it is just something else I would have to put on. I have a tri suit I wore at my last tri. That will be what I wear this time...and I hope I look better in it this time...I am about 20lbs lighter.:scared1:

AMY!! Get your butt back over where it belongs girl!! In the immortal words of Colonel Hathi from Jungle Book "Sabotage! This is treason!"

Just kidding. ;) You can fraternize to your heart's content. Just don't give away any government secrets!!!!

Sneaking back out now.....:tiptoe:

Christa: on the sport skirts, I've never had any, but I can imagine that the compression shorts are probably better than loose fit just for the "bagginess" factor. Compression shorts may give a more slim line. woo hoo.

Debra: Weird that core work aggravates the knee for you too. I knew going into doing the DVD that I probably wouldn't be able to go all out on the legs section of it and I didn't. I was just surprised that crunches would hurt my knee. I even did all of the modified "easy" method that the one girl demonstrates as opposed to the hard versions. I will be patient. I will be patient. I must keep saying that! Enjoy your not-so-surprise-trip to Disney!

oh all you 50k'ers. You know it's not *that* much farther than a marathon. If you're already running that far, go farther! hee hee. just keep runnin' a la Forrest Gump! You can do it!

Jen: Congrats on registering for the half, well hopefully registered!

Donating miles: Is that a real donation or a symbolic "donation" like running to send good wishes? I sort of got the impression from that post that it was symbolic, but hey, whatever works....

And hmmm...the what races am I thinking about this year. Well let's say I was thinking about quite a few until I was sidelined. There is a Midnight Leap Year 5k next week that I can't do... I am registered for a half marathon in May, but I think that's out the window for (1) lack of training and (2) I may be going to Cali for work that week and would have to fly day of that race... If I wasn't going to do that half, I wanted to do a 10k so I could get a time in for the Disney half next year - there's one of those in April, but well, that may go the way of the dust. My next chance is June for a 10k... HOPEFULLY I am doing the LI version of the Corporate Challenge in July (3.5miles). If I don't do the June 10k I have another chance in August but that will be rough because I have Mets tickets for the same day - race at 9am make it to Shea by 1pm??? I think a lot obviously. It's putting it into action that is not working out so well.

I'm off to post my miles/hours for the week on the other thread a bit early this week. I am supposed to be going into the city to be on Broadway cha-cha-cha tomorrow (not to participate, to watch a show, haha) but we are supposed to be getting a nasty snowstorm with ice and whatnot tomorrow as well. I hope the trains keep a-running tomorrow. I'm so annoyed because we've gotten a whopping 4 inches of snow this whole entire winter and now when I have big plans we're getting a crazy storm. Lovely. I know it's not the snow that's been pounding you folks in the Midwest these days but...

That's what I thought during my first (and only) 50k, but that last 5 miles wasn't anything like the first 5 miles!!

I am planning to do that same 50K again this December, so we'll see how much better I do this next time around!!

Good Evening!

I'll do a long catch-up post tomorrow morning, I just wanted to say "Hi!". I did an hour on the TM tonight. Not the best pace, but better than sitting on the couch...

Ok, any other Losties jaws drop like mine did?! Whew! This season is a vast improvement over last year. Sayid in a tux, and the reveals just keep coming...

As I said on another thread (I promised myself only 3 responses then I have to go to bed), Morpheus is about to claim me.

Have a good night, and a pleasant tomorrow!
Maria

Maria--- Yes I am a Lostie. Last night was my least favorite episode of the ones shown so far. Maybe it had to do that I kept dozing off from my cold medication and had trouble concentrating. I didn't expect the ending last night. Sayid was hot last week and Sawyer is the bad boy you just got to love. Looks like next week we will see what helps on the helicopter. I read that we will get 5 more episodes for a totat of 13 this season.

I did nothing last night as I was miserable with this cold and more than likely won't be doing anything today except snow shoveling.

Michelle-- What show are you seeing on Broadway? Have a great time.

Debra--- I like the idea of doing a race for a cause also. Susan Komen Race for the Cure is near me, now to just make sure it doesn't conflict with my scheduled WDW trip.

I liked the look of the running skirts that I saw this year at the marathon. I might have to check them out and maybe get one, but I would like one that is a little longer.

Will post my hours/ miles later today.

Nancy

Good Morning, Team Ohana!

Our snow has already started, we're supposed to get 6-9 now. The total keeps increasing every time I hear the weather.

Nancy -- Lost just blew me away with the ending last night. I thought I knew what I was seeing, and I was completely wrong. Oddly enough, I like that:rolleyes1 I'm looking forward to next week. I also understand that Michael is back in episode 8, and we will find out what he's been doing since he left with Walt.

Richard -- My eyes glaze over at the thought of 50K. You rock!:cool1:

Shell -- Have a great time on Broadway! I've only been to NYC once, and we say Jekyll and Hyde. I loved it! I'm crossing my fingers for your tranportation!pixiedust:

Martha, Amy and Panda -- You are welcome to socialize anytime you are inclined to do so. It's nice to hear from our other WISH buddies!:yay:

Christa -- I guess I need to find some races :confused3 . Right now I'm planning on doing the Harpoon 5 mile in May, and a 5K in September.

Jen -- There's no going back now, I predict you'll be making a new PR at the Half!:cloud9:

Robert -- See, 50 miles for me would be more of a nightmare than a dream. Ya'all are made of strong stuff. I can't imagine 19 extra miles, as you said, that's quite a difference!

Jeanne -- I also like Jen's idea for donation. After I get my workout in today, I'll post our miles/hours. I promise it will be earlier this week:guilty:

Debra -- My head is spinning from Lost -- and I'm also wondering if Jack knows Aaron is his nephew?:confused3 Greater claim than Kate...So, I wasn't counting Aaron as one of the six, what about you? I mean, he wasn't on the manifest, so I think there are two more adults we have yet to see.

Everyone say a little prayer for me tonight. Just me, dh, assorted 9-10 yr. old boys, and two elderly annoyed cats -- ds is having his first sleepover. We have plenty of not-healthy snacks and an ice cream cake, we're ordering pizza, and I'm hoping they'll stay within the living room, play room and ds's bedroom. DS is bouncing around like it's Christmas Eve. We're keeping all the kids until their whiffleball game at 2, so I have to feed them multiple times. That's the easy part. Maybe I can toss them out in the snow to play...

Anyway, have a great day!:goodvibes
Maria

Hi guys! :goodvibes Thanks for not minding that I crash your thread all the time.

I have a tri suit I wore at my last tri. That will be what I wear this time...and I hope I look better in it this time...I am about 20lbs lighter.

Christa...yeahhhh...the tri suit....the main reason I'm thinking of getting that transition girl skirt. I've never tried one on...but I'm afraid it will be unflattering :scared1: . Not that I really care that much about how I look during a race...it's one of those things I think about before hand...but once in the midst of the event it won't matter a bit. I know I'll be SUPER slow during the tri lol...so I'm not sure if it matters how long it takes me to transition.

Another question for you on the tri....is it more grueling than a marathon in your opinion? I have no point of reference for how it's going to feel, except that I know swimming is BRUTAL!!! I finally got my bike on the trainer yesterday so I'm hoping to put some miles in, in addition to the spin classes. Need to get my bike fitness up for sure.

Deb: Love the charity idea. :goodvibes Also...the novel you mentioned...I may go check them out right now. I'm in the midst of a cool book currently which I hope to finish soon. *zipping over to Amazon right now*

Maria: :) Have fun with the sleepover. I just did that with my DD8 for her b-day. It was great...if not a little chaotic!

Shell...What are you seeing? I LOVE b'dway shows.

Shell and Debra.... So what exercises are you doing that hurt your knee?? I'd be curious. I've had pilates clients complain about knee pain during certain things too. If I know what's bothering you specifically I *may* be able to give you some modifications that make it feel better :).

Have a great weekend everyone. As usual...you guys are rockin' it!!!!

Figuring I still have time to do a couple races before south Texas really heats up, I registered for a half marathon in Seabrook, Texas on March 15th; plus I am also planning on running a 25K (15.5 miles) trail run on April 5th.

I also found out that my 5K this weekend, the inaugural Muddy Trails 5K, was cancelled due to too much mud!! Go figure! I had hoped the muddy course would be a god equalizer to the slow of foot like me.

This is such an active group that I can hardly follow all the conversations. Keep it up, Team Ohana!
