21 miles done today in 3:59:45!!!!! I decided to go an extra mile. I felt really good and strong the whole way, although my quads sure are sore now. Good thing I've got a massage booked in a couple of hours!

K so I've been slacking on the posting but here's my usual monthly post with July's totals:

247 bike
53 run

Total:
300 miles
29:09 hours

Nearly managed to average an hour a day, and over the past 4 weeks I've missed no workouts, taking only Monday off each week! Even better, with 4 days of running per week still no shin splints!

August has started off with a bang too, did another metric century ride to support United Way of 62 miles on the bike this morning, and have a 9 mile run scheduled for tomorrow as the long run stretches out for DL...

Hi Everyone,

Our thread was about to drop off the first page. Can't let that happen. It has been hot here in SC this last week. But this weekend morning temps are supposed to be in the mid to high 60's. :yay:

So far this month I have run 59.5 miles in 524 minutes.

This week is a bit quieter for me since I'm now into my taper. I blew up the rear tube on my bike and still need to fix it so minimal riding this week it seems. For the month so far:

Total Time: 07:18:03
Total Dist.: 28.4 Mi

It looks impressive mostly thanks to my 21 miler on Saturday!
Sunday is my first triathlon...

Hello-

It's hard for me to post often (esp. at work) but here is my week's activity to date:

FRI Aug 1 - 3.5 miles running (40 min); 60 min weight training
SAT Aug 2 - REST
SUN Aug 3 - 14 miles running (~3 hr)
MON Aug 4 - 60 min weight training
TUE Aug 5 - 3.8 miles running (40 min); 20 min yoga

I posted last week (also my first week) totals on the July page.

My goals for the rest of the week: 5 mile run & 4 mile run before my 1/2 marathon on Sunday, 1-2 hr weight training, more yoga (it seems to help my muscles relax after I run).

until next post.....

Leana- Good luck in your first Tri. Way to go with the 21 miler.

Lisa- Good luck in the 1/2 marathon.

Can't wait to read the race reports from both of you.

David

Reporting in for this week.

I have been cleared to start running again! It has been a very humbling week. I am starting from square one - using the same program I used when I first started running. Hopefully, I'll build up to running all of the January Half. I think I have time, I initially thought I wouldn't be able to run until September, so I have a month extra to work with. For now I'm doing a run/walk, I think it is wise of me to start slow - I was surprised how much I have lost - very, very humbling! I'm also struggling a bit with motivation. I'm kinda bummed I have to go back for more surgery right after the Half due to the complications I had. This is kinda playing mind games with me - like I want to run the Half, but I know after I run it I'll be coming home for more surgery. Does that make any sense?

Sooo anyway,
warmup & cooldown
1.50 miles / 30:00
run1/walk2
6.53 miles / 1:36:00
total
8.03 miles / 2:06:00

Happy training to my fellow Hercs!

Hi All,
Yes, yes, I know very naughty, LONG time no post. I have been out of town for most of the last two months and have hardly exercised at all (June/July).
I do have some totals for this month for you however:
As to date in August:
30 Miles total (Mixture of run/walk)
7 hours total

Today I did 39 minutes/3.1 miles.

The other day I did 25 minutes/1.5 miles (bad, bad, bad day, mostly walked it).

So for the week of August 2-August 8 I will have 64minutes/4.6 miles.

Allyson

Allyson - We all have those days unfortunately! Keep at it though!

Shan - Welcome back! I'm so happy to hear you've been cleared to run again. Ugh for more surgery though. I totally understand that would be demotivating. As for your speed, just stick with it, because you can and will get back to where you were before.

Davis' Mom - Welcome back to you too! Did you get to go anywhere fun for your out of town trips? I've got you back on the roster and recorded your numbers.

Lisa - Good luck on your half!!!

Matt - Glad to hear your training is going well!

David - Are you tapering this month?

I've been taking it fairly easy this week as I jumped into my taper, but I also want to give my legs a rest in preparation for my first tri on Sunday. I'm so excited!!!!

I just spent three hours running around my neighborhood searching for my cat (we found her) did about three miles. Did a bunch of bending, crawling, and peeking to find her.

I've hit the treadmill for 2.5 miles in about 35 minutes.
Also have done 360 minutes of shoveling ice. The manager of my department is on vacation, so I was a bit busy lately.

Leana - good luck on your 1st tri! I'm considering a triathlon next year but I've got to make it through this year first.

David - are you training for any races right now? Your mileage is unbeliveable! I'm trying to consistently run 25-30 miles a week.

Shan - you completed an 8 mile run and you just started running again - wow!

Question for you experienced marathoners:

Most training plans have the longest run prior to the marathon as a 20 miler 3 weeks before the event. The schedule used by the group I run with has a 20 miler, 22 miler, and 24 miler - the 24 miler is 4 weeks before the race.

I do not feel comfortable running 24 before the marathon (it would take me a really long time and I'm afraid I could hurt myself and not make it to the start line). The 20 miler was scheduled last week but I opted to cut my run short so I could recover faster before Sunday's 1/2 marathon.

I'm thinking of running 20 twice before the marathon (since I know the 1st one will be brutal - 18 wasn't pretty for me). What is your experience and what do you recommend?

Lisa, that was over the course of three days. :lmao:

Lisa-

I am running the Kiawah marathon here in SC December 6th. I am trying to Boston Qualify with a sub 3:20. Check out my journal here on the site. I appreciate your encouragement.

As far as the 24 miler. I think that is way to much. What is your goal for the marathon? Is this your first? If so, your goal should be to finish. To do that you have to get to the starting line healthy.

How long did it take you to run 18 miles? I don't recommend running over 3 hours. It will just beat you up to much.

How many miles per week are you going to be peaking at?

I can give you better advice after answering these questions.

David

I think 24 miles is a bit much. I know Galloway wants you to run 26 before the race, but I really don't think you have to worry that you won't be able to cover the last few miles just because you didn't go that far in training. Better to make it to the starting line healthy. I'm not an expert, but I'd max out at 20 or maybe 22.

Leana, NO nothing too exciting. I was in a wedding, then to the in-laws, then work related trips. There were fun times of all, but when traveling with a 9/10 month old it can be a bit stressful.

TODAY:
6 miles 1hr. 18 minutes

Didn't want to go out this morning but I made myself. It stunk and I cut it short but I guess a little is better than nothing right?

18 minutes
1.4 miles

I think I need to work on getting more sleep. I'm a night owl but staying up late and then trying to run in the morning before DH leaves for work, not working for me. And eating better, I think it is time to look into that too. Tired with a bite of a banana before leaving just isn't working for me, LOL! The kids go back to school in 2 weeks. That will be easier, then I can run mid morning. I think I'll like that much better.

Have a great day Heroes!

Allyson
