Teachers' Thread

Only a week and a half (or a week) left in school for us Uk based teachers!
Plus sports day is this week which is always nice if the weather keeps good!

I have been part time this year but luckily have had my contract increased to full time next year, so maybe I'll even get back to wdw next summer ;)

Hope all educators enjoy the summer break, man do we deserve it :)

We don't have a Staples nearby. Yesterday I hit our local WalMart. OH MAN. I spent $177 on stuff for my classroom. ugh. The folders I buy are usually 10 - 15 cents each. This year they are 25cents. I have to buy at least 100. I will have to buy more later, but hoping they will go on clearance soon. They don't carry the cheaper 8 pack of crayons that I use with my kids anymore, so I had to buy the 97 cents each Crayola packs. :scared: (I buy 50 of these so I will have enough for two semesters - the kids are HARD on crayons).

So anyway - I spent alot more this year up front. The good thing is the school will reimburse up to $200 - the bad thing is - I only have less than $25 now for the rest of the school year.

You know I have taught at this school for 15 years. The reimbursement alottment has been the same for all this time. I wish they would allow at least $50 more to account for the cost of living. Ah but I am just venting.

Two weeks until I have to go back for inservice and then school starts back August 5. Where did my summer go? :confused3

ETA: in case you are wondering why I don't have parents buy their kids the folders and crayons, I am the music teacher. I tried sending home a note one year to get these supplies and you wouldn't believe the stuff parents sent. But very little of it was what I specifically asked for. ugh.

Yes, yes, yes!!! We are enjoying the summer now that the weather has improved. Yesterday, I went to the beach for the first time this summer.

We go back August 31st:sad1:

End-of-year inservice ended for me on June 23, and I was on a plane for Orlando on June 24. :cool1: Spent at week at WDW (short TR: awesome, humid, rainy, awesome, hot, and awesome), then came back to San Francisco, where I miss Disney but not the sweating.

The month of July is a "working month" for me. I have a ton of curriculum development stuff to do, and I'm trying to pick off a few hours of work each day. This coming weekend, though, is Azkatraz (a Harry Potter convention here in SF), so that'll be a bit of a distraction.

That was an awesome trip the day after school ended! I'd be worried about snow days cutting into it! Very cool about the HP convention, too! :) Fun times!

A week left, which includes sports day! I'm sooooo ready for my summer break :)

Hello.I don't really post too often on this board but I thought I'd jump in here and introduce myself so that maybe I can get some advice from vetran teachers. :) My name is Sarah and I am a single mother of 2 beautiful children. We are all Disney freaks! I am also double majoring in Elementary and Special Education (Cross Catagorical). I want to teach primary grades Sp Ed. I will begin student teaching in December and am very excited, nervous, and scared all at the same time. It's been a long road (10 years) to get to this point but I am ready for the real work/ fun to begin!

:welcome: Sarah! I am so excited to hear that you will be student teaching in the fall. I'd be happy to help if you have questions! Do you know what grade level yet? :teacher:

I'm so glad we can chat here. We have 21 school days left. I'm so tired too. We just finished state testing last week and the kids are nutty. I also applied for a new position for our district...an upper elementary reading specialist and literacy coach. I'll have two fifth grade reading classes and then work with third and fourth grade the rest of the day. That should make for an interesting year next year. Oh and I was just nominated as union vice president. Not sure if I'm going to do it or not yet though.

I am also a literacy coach in NJ. Hope you enjoy your new position!

Hi Teachers!!!

I just wanted to check in as everyone prepares for a new school year. The school supplies are out in stores and it seems like most people down south and out west are not too far from the first day. How long do you have left? I have about 40 days until two in-service days and then the kiddos come in. I'm so excited! :)

Lately, I've become interested in getting loads of different things from Vista Print. I got business cards from them awhile back and have gotten some awesome freebie emails lately. I already made some large magnets for the chalkboard, pens, mouse pads, thank you cards, and more. Anyone else doing this?

:welcome: Sarah! I am so excited to hear that you will be student teaching in the fall. I'd be happy to help if you have questions! Do you know what grade level yet? :teacher:

Thanks so much for the warm welcome Nikki! I actually begin student teaching in December. I haven't been assigned a grade yet but I am hoping for 1-3rd grade. In August I will do 2 practicums where I will teach for a couple hours a day in Special Education at the high school and then a few hours each day teaching 2nd grade Social Studies, Math, and Science. I am so excited to begin but do not feel nearly prepared enough! The next few weeks I don't have classes so I will be perusing the net for ideas. :)

Hi Teachers!!!
about 40 days until two in-service days and then the kiddos come in.

I wasn't jealous when we got out earlier, but I am jealous now. We start in-service Tuesday. I have a million details to get the tech stuff ready for the school. I hope I have time to decorate my room before Open House for new students. Enjoy the rest of your summer everyone!

I hope I'm not intruding, but I thought that I would join in on this thread because I am going to University in the fall to become a elementary school teacher. I think that teachers are amazing people and that they have the best job in the entire world! I have to start doing placements in my second year and am so looking forward to doing this as it has been my dream since I was in kindergarten.

I have 20 days of summer until our first teacher in-service.
