Hi all,

I've found a regimen that I plan to try for both my skin and my DD's (both quite acne prone). It's called the Oil Cleansing Method, and one of the recommended oils to use is Tea Tree Oil.

Does anyone know where I might find Tea Tree Oil, as in in a regular store? I'm hoping I won't have to order it and have it shipped, but I have NO idea what kind of store or which department I'd look in!

Thanks in advance for any/all info! :thumbsup2

I know they sell it at the Body Shop.

ETA: Looks like there are a ton of places you can try- Tea Tree Oil

you can get in the pharmacy at walmart - but it STINKS!!! I use this to treat head lice mixed with conditioner works great and natural no chemicals like the shampoo and works better - I know it has many uses just don;t know them all :goodvibes

I use straight castor oil myself, with good results. The jojoba or olive oil blends are too moisturizing for my skin. Castor oil is very drying.

Make sure you find 100% pure tea tree oil. A lot of the ones you find in retail stores like macys or even the grocery store are a blend.

Just my 2 cents... I think tea tree oil is a lot of hype. I used it for over 8 months on my scalp because it was supposed to be some miracle healer for scalp issues. Well, it did nothing but make my hair greasy all the time and my scalp still itches. I ended up having to see the derm and get prescription shampoos which still didn't help.

But try it, maybe it will help.

Walmart carries it. Usually it's on a bottom shelf. One warning though. My niece tried this for her acne. She said it burned her skin. You may want to do a very small test spot first. hth

That's exactly what they say about the castor, and the other is to balance out the drying effect since it IS so very drying it can cause additional problems; I guess the tea tree is to reduce redness, which is something DD is VERY interested in! I did mention to her that it was stinky, but she says she doesn't care LOL Also sez to make sure not to get it around the eye area, so I'll probably make two batches, one with and one without.

Good to know I can find it in regular stores, thank you! And now I know where to look for it too! :woohoo: I hate having to wander aimlessly through a store without a clue where to look, and with no clerks available to help.

Thanks again! :grouphug:

Would you care to post your 'recipe'? My DD has cystic acne on her back and shoulders(hormones and working out cause it). The tea tree oil does help, but it STINKS and burns a little. It smells so bad it's not something I'd use in the morning, but only at night. I got some at Target, near the vitamins. GNC also carries it.

Target near the vitamins. Could you elaborate on the acne plan? My daughter has bad acne as well.

If you have Trader Joe's they carry it and theirs is fairly inexpensive for the 100% pure stuff.

Wegman's also sells it in the "organic" and holistic area. Pure Tree Tea oil. (it isn't cheap but a little goes a long way)

Yeah the stuff stinks. But I have used it successfully for my DD's dandruff problem. I would be interested in hearing about the acne formula

This is the information as it was given to me; I hope it will help anyone else that may be interested! Oh, and this may end up going into two posts, there's a lot of info! :)

I got these recipes from Mother Earth News years ago, it's for Oil Cleansing Method and treatment or moisturizing oils. The oil is for the cleansing step, and can be used in very small amounts as a moisturizer or treatment left on trouble spots:

Remember that your face cloths should be double rinsed and dried on High in the dryer. This way there are no impurities or buggies to get into your open pores. Also, as indelicate as it may sound, never wash your face cloths with anything that has touched your private parts or your underarms or your feet as these areas are ripe with bacteria, microbes, and fungi that your sensitive face skin can't handle.

Patch test oils on inside of forearm for safety.

1. Skin Cleanser, apply Oil mixture without water with clean hands.
2. Massage well, concentrating on areas where pores are clogged or enlarged.
Don't forget around the lips and the neck.
3. If applying over makeup, tissue off the grunge and then add more oil and massage some more.
4. Steam Face with very warm cloth for at least 2 minutes. It is helpful to use two cloths as this holds the heat in better.
5. Wipe face well and splash with cool water.

For moisturizer, 2-4 drops of the oil mixture can be spread over the face and neck.
For treatment of scars, apply 2 times a day.
For acne prone skin, Cleanse and splash with cool water 2 times per day, if moisturizer is needed, use carrier oil only.

Re: [Article] The Oil Cleansing Method, as requested.

GrowAlready,
It sounds like your skin IS trying to purg and that you have a bacteria problem and that you are drying out your skin. Also, maybe you aren’t steaming and massaging enough.

If you strip your pores of the “good” natural acid mantle (thin natural oil) this lets the pores shrink and stick closed and also become irritated. If you don’t massage well, the oil doesn’t do its job (picture mixing oil with butter, think how much you’d have to mix the oil (acid mantle) with the butter (thicker contents of blemishes) before the oil would start to thin and become a solvent to the butter.

As a mom, I’d recommend (and have done with my sons) Make a mixture that is “untouched by human hands” and contains the simplest of oils that work great.

1) Purchase a brand new bottle of olive oil (8 oz or 12 oz)

2) Purchase a brand new bottle of castor oil from the pharmacy (4 oz.)

3) Purchase a small bottle of tea tree oil.

4) Pour enough of the olive oil out to allow you to make the final product 25% castor oil (because you are going to do your face at least twice a day and you don't want to dry it out).

For instance If you buy an 8 oz bottle, pour out 2 oz (1/4 cup or 4 Tablespoons) then refill the bottle to its former level with castor oil.
Or, If you buy a 12 oz. bottle, pour out 3 oz (6 Tablespoons) and refill the bottle to its former level with castor oil.

5) Now add about ¼ to ½ tsp. of tea tree oil to the bottle. (from a tsp that measure that has been boiled for at least 3 minutes.) and shake well.

When you use it, wash your hands well (at least 45 seconds) with warm soapy water, then pour the mixture into your hand without touching the bottle lip to your hand.

Massage into skin (avoid the eye area as the tea tree oil can really irritate the eyes). Massage well for at least two minutes.

Now steam your face a bit with a very warm clean washcloth or tent your head over a sink/basin of really hot clean water and massage some more. Wipe off with a warm clean rag, and put a drop or two of the mixture on your face, it will spread far because of the dampness of your skin.

Lastly, cultivate the habit of NOT TOUCHING YOUR FACE unless you wash your hands first.
The CDC says that if we all wash our hands often and don't touch our faces then most communicable diseases (colds, flu, strep, etc) would not be transferred.

DD had a bad case of cystic acne and one son did also. DD had hers get steadily better and she uses the above mixture exclusively, she only uses ¼ tsp. of the tea tree oil in an 12 oz. bottle of mixture.

DS1 had his acne flare up, he didn’t use the tea tree oil because he didn’t like the smell, he continued and it got a bit better. Then, he got strep throat and went on antibiotics—miraculously his face cleared up and he started getting the little hard plugs. We deduced that the bacteria must have been killed by the antibiotics and the OCM had his pores open lubricated and ready to take advantage of the situation. He added the tea tree and his skin continued to get better, today, you’d be hard pressed to believe he ever got a zit in his life. It took the “cavity” under his left cheek about a year to totally shrink down till you couldn’t feel it—but it looked fine after about 2 months. This big cyst had been there under the skin for 3 years.

DS2 had his acne go away and come back after 6 months. He had the habit of putting the bottle lip against his hand to pour it. He also wasn’t washing his hands well before cleaning his face. Also, because he was at college he made his own mixture and was using way too much castor oil because he wasn’t measuring. When he came home for Christmas DD put him on HER strict regimen and watched him do his face 2 times a day for 3 weeks. His face completely cleared again. We think he was rubbing the grungy germs into his face from his hands and maybe even had them in the bottle.

Hope this helps.

Also, Grapeseed oil is NOT recommended by dermatologists (at least not mine)

Oh, and if anyone is interested in reading through 72 pages of the thread on the subject, HERE is the link to it.

If anyone decides to try this, please let us know what results you have! I certainly will be :)

I love Tea Tree oil! I use it to cleanse my skin and open my pores before applying Henna. :) It works GREAT! I bought mine at Trader Joe's, it's 100% pure and in a small bottle. I also have Melalueca oil but I have not yet tried it.
And I guess I'm weird.....I think Tea Tree oil smells good, not something I'd want to wear in public but I think it has a very clean smell. :) Strong yes, but clean.

Tea Tree Oil was recommended to me for a cold sore by the owners of a local health food store that I frequent. I have to say, it didn't seem to work for me. The cold sore only got worse and it took soooo long for it to go away.
I had always used cold sore meds. that you can find at the drugstore, but thought I would try something "natural". Since then I have returned to using the drugstore meds when I get one.
So...I'm not sure if Tea Tree Oil will help you, but it won't hurt to try!

For your cold sore try using pure vitamin E oil next time. I got some at Target and when we get them (my girls get them more than I do) we top it with Vitamin E and it does help. If you can't find it in liquid form just get capsules and stick a pin thru the end, then you can squeeze it out. :)

The Body Shop has a Tea Tree Oil line of face products. :) I've been using it for a couple weeks, and I've been very happy with it. :goodvibes

Really!! Interesting! I'll have to check that out :D
