We ate at Tchop Chop on Sunday November 9th and enjoyed it very much. Our reservation was for 6:00 and someone called our room on Sat. afternoon to confirm it. We arrived a few minutes early and were seated promptly. For some reason, I expected the restuarant to be much larger, but it was still gorgeous. There is a large infinity pool in the center of the room with gorgeous lighting and a waterfall wall over the kitchen area. We were seated a table away from the pool area and I wished I could have been sitting right next to it, but it was still lovely. There was a scattering of people there when we got there, and by the time we left, it was packed with lots of people waiting outside to get in.
Our waiter was very nice, he told us about the other servers who would be helping him, but I mostly saw him throughout the meal. We did not feel rushed in anyway - we ordered appetizers and when he asked if we would like to order our meal now, we declined saying we were not ready. He was fine with that. Before ordering we received our drinks and a basket with some fried wontons and puffed rice sort of thing and a GREAT dipping sauce for it - kind of a peanut, sesame sauce. YUM!
For appetizers we had steamed mussles, which were superb and so tiny. They were served in the shell in a lemongrass and herb broth. We also ordered dumplins which were great. They were served with a great dipping sauce. These appetizers were more than enough for two people.
For our main course I had a stir fry noodle dish wish shrimp, spicy ham, peapods, and ****ake mushrooms. It was good - not the best I have ever had, but good. They need to put more mushrooms in this dish for sure. Steve got the BBQ chicken platter which was really great. The chicken was so tender and every bite had a great flavor - it must have been marinated. For the life of me, I can't remember what else came with this except for bok choy (which we love) and carrots. The carrots are the standard - "throw them under the steamer but don't really cook them" which I think is a cop out for restuarants, but they were still fine. Again the chicken was superb.
One thing did bother me about the main course. When one of the waiters was taking our order he had a bit of an attitude. I said I wanted the salmon dish and he asked how I wanted it cooked. I immedietely changed my order to the noodle dish. He was very annoyed with me and made it quite clear he thought I was being ridiculous. I don't feel like I have to justify my changing my order and felt his attitude was uncalled for.
I will let you guys know - whenever a restuarant asks me how I want my fish cooked, I change my order. I know a lot of people are eating sushi these days and I even like some kinds. But to me, fish is not a dish that you order rare, medium or well done. Fish is just done when it is cooked through and if they have to ask you, I'm not eating it. Fish is either cooked or uncooked period. The exception to this may be tuna, which is more like a steak and some people like it medium, but to me, not salmon. Ok, stepping of my soap box.
For dessert I ordered the praline parfait. It came with homemade vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce and was served in a wonton type bowl. Everything was delicious except the bowl, which tasted like cardboard. We also asked our waiter (the nice one) to recommend a tea and he recommended the Jasmine tea which we enjoyed very much. The aroma was just great - we joked that it would be great to bathe in - but tasted great too!!
The price of this restuarant is comparable to anything where we live in New Hampshire, if not a little less. And the quantities were not skimpy at all. Our waiter seemed very shocked by the tip we left him and said several times how much he appreciated it. I'm not sure if people tend to tip less in that part of the country, but we always tip well for good service, and the service was great and our main waiter was very helpful and pleasant.
I would definatley recommend this restuarant to anyone who likes this type of cuisine. Stay tuned for my Mythos review coming next!
