TB infected man from airplane identified

Will he get yesterday's results prior to six weeks? I think that wait might kill me in and of itself..... What about yourself? EEK, just realized, is your DH still going out and working and such? It's a difficult situation for you :(

Sending Pixie Dust your way!

If he hears nothing in 6 weeks time, we go along our business, and still retest at that time. I went to the GP yesterday, and will go for scans and bloodwork Monday, as I had other business there. He was not sitting nearhim, but did a walkthrough with this man there.

It is very difficult. We were going away for 3 days just he and I. We have been once in 12 years without kids. We were really looking forward to it. I know health comes first, but I am still VERY upset. I will get over it.. We could go, but I won't do that after it is suggested we don't..

Thanks for the kind words.

He really has to wait six weeks for the test results, I'm sending Double pixie dust to you pixiedust: Is he able to go to work and interact with the children? My thoughts will be with you....

He is off work now, as was planned. He can go to work Tuesday. All crew have been tested...

I don't know exactly when the results get to his doctor at Air Canada. I only know that we were told 6 weeks. I am sure to be on the phone sooner.

I also contacted the pediatrician and brought the kids right in. They will have the same testings as me on Monday. Their school is aware. No quarantines are suggested yet..

I can not tell you how often our Government has called my house.

What have they said if I can ask? I don't think our government would ever call our house for anything....

I think it is more because my hubby has a government job, and if there is anything they can do, NOT to speak to media. We made an excellent choice NOT to travel, etc...

Imagine we did our weekend getaway, and somehow they got results my DH was positive..

He is not at high risk, compared to some..

Rather than this be an American v. Canadian issue, the ultimate responsibility was his. He is a personal injury lawyer who engaged in reckless behavior. Also, his wife is is a third-year law student at Atlanta's Emory University.

Blame him.

This is a humanitarian issue. He should be held accountable and should have done the right thing in the first place. For example, they could have married here. Plus, it also relates to how SARS and the avian flu is going to affect us all. It will take a world effort to fight it, kwim? One person, one infection can and does make a difference when it comes to an epidemic and/or pandemic...

I absolutely do hold him accountable. I was just trying to point out to Amlee that this in no way reflected on Canadian border security. She tied this incident into Canadian border security and terrorism(?).

Jamimb, I might have had a little sympathy for the guy if he had done the responsible thing after being informed while in Europe not to fly. At that point, he put himself ahead of every person on the return flight to Montreal and every other person that he came into direct contact with, and potentially, if the disease is spread, every person that infected people come into contact with, and so on. He might not have had complete information prior to going to Europe but his tears and apologies will not excuse the decisions he made after being informed.

Preaching to the choir. I so agree.

At the time they boarded that jet to Canada, they were told for 24 hours beforehand, all the way up the chain of command at the CDC that there would be NO aircraft to bring him back to the USA

I'm not trying to argue with you chris1gill, but where did you read this? I've been reading CNN articles and I can't find it. :)

Off Topic but given you don't have a national health system, what, if any, requirement is there for people to get immunizations?

Here, children are given:
Diptheria, tetanus, whooping cough, meningitis C, polio, pneumococcal infection vaccines at 2-4 months. Some of these get require another injection at 12 months. They also get measles, mumps and rubella vaccines at just after a year old. You CAN opt-out, but not many parents do (~95% have the injections). Kids get boosters of these throughout their school life. At 13, kids get a tuberculosis vaccination, too.

As an adult, you get recalled by the health service to come for booster vaccinations (e.g. tetanus every 10 years, gotta get mine done again soon).

Where I live you need to show proof that your child is TB free and immunized prior to enrolling in the public school system and (at least my children) also at their private preschool. I recall at certain jobs I have had I also needed to prove these things as an adult.

They have to have DTP, Polio, Hib (Haemophilus influenzae), Hepatitis B, MMR, Varicella (chicken pox) and in some cases they have to have a lead test done depending on where they live. Kids have to have the required amounts in order to start school, unless they have a medical or religious reason for not having them.
