So last week at a Phillies game a 19 year old young man jumped onto the field and did a keystone cops routine until he was tazered by the police.

Now Steve (young field runners) isn't getting much love for the folks here in Philly but we've booed santa claus so we're a tough crowd.

Did the police go to far?

I'm firmly on the cops side. I'm a season ticket holder for the Phillies and I get sick of fans acting like park apes.

I'm also a bit tired of people breaking the law and then crying "Woe is me" waa waaa waa. How about we don't break the law in the first place.

Was tazing the first action? Did the police try to approach him before the tazing? If other things were tried, and tazing was the last option, I have no problem with it.

Most times I've seen a fan run onto a field, they've run in a straight line until they're tackled. From the youtube videos, this young man ran around, changing direction and purposefully eluding the security and police. IMHO, he deserved to be tasered.

Umm, the poll needs fixing. The options don't make sense.

They chased him around the field.

71% of Philadelphia, thinks the cops should have ramped up the voltage. :lmao: We take our Phillies seriously folks.

Phillies fan here and I have no problem with it. No one knew what the kid could have been up to besides running onto the field. He could have tried to hurt one of the players. The person who stabbed Monica Selles jumped onto the court.

This also happened at a A's game before- a fan being tasered for running onto the field.

No. They didn't go too far. I think if we tazed people more often, they'd stop acting like morons.

i don't understand the poll, so i can't answer that.

but i think it's a little absurd to taser someone who is just running around on a field. he wasn't endangering himself or anyone else. i mean what's next, just shooting someone for running on the field??

there were like 4 other people running after him BESIDES the cop and they were almost to the guy when the cop(was that even a cop? or was it a rent-a-cop?) decided to taser him.

Definitely not going too far in that case.

Clarifying poll
No, cops did not go too far.
Yes, cops did go too far

I like the taser idea and hope more stadiums adopt this tactic. I would hope that they would replay it on the jumbotron screens for all of us to enjoy after.

Taze the kid! You don't know he "wasn't endangering anyone." He could have done anything out there. Monica Selles is right. The kid is a moron and he's lucky the only thing that happened to him was that he was hit with the tazer.

He deserved it.
Not only did he call his dad to ask permission - stupid thing number one
he did it after dad said bad idea- stupid thing number 2

taze him, given him his "Stupid" sign and take his darwin token!

I agree. There have been people die from being tasered.

More security should have come out, and they could have caught him without resorting to tasering.

He is still in his teens, immature, but yet he should have some sort of punishment. Community service or something. But definitely not tasering for an "offense" like that. Good grief.

Anybody remember the manager or was it the first base coach who was attacked by a fan who ran onto the field? I want to say it was at a whitesox game but I can't remember.

vaguely. I remember something. Wasn't there a fan that attacked a pitcher once too?

coach attacked - link not working. Sports Illustrated Sept 2002

A cubs pitcher was almost attacked in 2007 by a drunk fan but was clotheslined by I think the catcher.

Tazering should be considered a potentially deadly force--better than shooting someone in some cases, but potentially deadly nonetheless. I would not risk an idiot kid's life for interrupting a game unless I thought he was a threat to others (for example, running around with a knife).

My nephew is a good friend of the guy. He said after he got home from court/jail/police station the next day the friend called my nephew to say "It doesn't matter what they did to me, it was so worth it & I'd do it again in a heartbeat." Um, ok, then I hope they tazer you HARDER next time! Idiot!

So he obviously didn't learn his lesson from the tazer or arrest or anything. My nephew said he has community service & a small fine to pay. And he thinks he's the coolest thing since sliced bread. They should have made him sit in jail a few days, then maybe it wouldn't be "so worth it I'd do it again." I have no tolerance for people that want to do the same stupid thing TWICE and admit it.

Is your poll in reverse or am I just reading it wrong???

How would they (the cops or the Phillies management) know this?? How do you know he wasn't carrying a weapon? There was no way to know how far this "fan" would go.

I think they did the right thing. Unfortunately, it did not set an example. Another idiot ran out on the field during last nights game. It totally messed up Hamels momentum. Luckily, the Phils were able to pull off a win!

Doesn't matter if he was or was not endangering anyone. Fans know they can't go on the field. If had just given up and was allowed to be on the field it would have all been over in a matter of seconds. But this goober decided to run around the field in a zigzag line. The tasing was deserved.
