Taylor Swift - The Eras Tour (Movie)

It’s not only a cheaper way, it’s also the only way some can see the concert. Tickets are very very hard to come by. I tried, but didn’t get chosen to purchase. I know die hard fans who have always seen her when she comes to Toronto, and they didn’t make the cut either. Totally random selection of who was chosen and it sucks for some big fans. I probably won’t go see the movie, doesn’t sound like something I would enjoy really. I’m glad the option is there for those who didn’t get tickets though.
Yeah all the shenanigans of "verified fan" to get a chance to buy tickets and low and behold, tickets still end up on resale sites for astronomical amounts of money. They could fix the entire problem of resale ticket by making concert tickets like airline flights. Your ticket gets your name on it and it gets YOU in the door. The artists go along with the current gambit because they want to brag that their shows sold out in minutes instead of hours or days...

I seem to recall Swift blasting Ticketmaster and how they monopolized and manipulated ticket prices, and not just for her concerts. In a round about way, it's probably part of what led to the movie version. Most of the stuff around the ticket sales were not her doing..... unless you count the high demand factor.

Taylor, or her management team run her business like a boss. The rules don't apply to her, she is currently the biggest star in the world and you'll do business with her that way she wants it done, or you won't be doing business with her.

It's refreshing really, after decades of artist getting screwed over by record companies, artist management, concert promoters, now the artist has the upper hand. I'd say she's re-writing the rules of the music biz, but it's contingent on one thing: The artist in question has to be as good, or at least as popular as Taylor.
True, few others could have pulled off a move like skipping the studios. I'm very curious to see how this sets a precedent for future films.

Very few films would ever have the demand to pull off not including a studio or distributor for their movie. It simply wouldn't get seen. I don't think this sets any kind of precedent for the movie industry in any way. The only reason this works is because it is Taylor and the marking for the movie is built in to the product.

Yes you're movie is going to have to be in demand, but I disagree that this won't have any affect on future films. As for setting a president, I would never condone dipping a Commander in Chief in cement.

I fixed my typo. As for the situation of going straight to theaters and bypassing studios, Taylor essentially had to fully fund and produce the movie concert. That same thing would need to happen for any future film to be able to do the same thing. Studios ultimately fund the films. A film would need to be 100% funded by someone, not sure who, without studios involved. Studios put up the money. No money, no movie...

As for whether or not this sets a precedent? That depends on what you mean. For music? she already has. For cinema? As in, will more artists go around the studios and just work directly with cinemas? Probably not, as most artists don't have the clout of Swift. Now if Springsteen wanted to do what she did? Maybe. But if a smaller act like Of Monsters and Men wanted to do it, the studios would be laughing so hard the band wouldn't hear them say Komast héðan!

Taylor went around the studios because the studios wouldn't work with her. The film studios act like any other big corporation, they want what they want on their own terms. They do it because they can.
Remember though that lots of independent films are released that aren't from the large studios.

@dioxide45 is essentially correct, Swift funded the film, but it mainly consisted of editing, sound mixing, and graphics so it wasn't like she was paying the tab of the next Transformers movie. Plus, by going around the studios, she acted as Producer and gets to keep a large percentage of the profits with the rest going to AMC/Cinemark.

And to further add, with the current strikes, theaters had not a lot going on at the moment (😉), so they were happy to give the space in the theaters to something that would be a cash cow for them. It was the perfect opportunity for this to happen.

Beyoncé is planning to release the same thing from her tour, and it will be interesting to see how she ends up distributing it and how well it sells.

They actually had a trailer for Beyonce's movie before Swift's. I'm also curious to see how Beyonce does this, as well as over the next couple years if other artists will follow suit.

Went to see the Eras Tour movie in IMAX with my 7 year old. Worth the $50 for sure. I don’t like the songs from folklore or evermore, so they provided the perfect bathroom break times. Don’t know much about Midnights but I was surprised when Taylor had a slightly more mature performance for one of the songs. I’d always put on her music in the car not because we were Swifties, but because most of the lyrics were clean.

I was surprised her debut album didn’t get an Era. Wish they’d kept Wildest Dreams and made the cuts to folklore instead. Not a fan of the 10 min version of All Too Well either. But I’m looking at this based on the music I like, and not from the business perspective. I’m sure Taylor Swift and/or her management team have their reasons for promoting certain albums and songs.

Overall it was a fun experience. I loved the outfits, the stage effects, the energy, the palpable confidence and charisma that Taylor has. It was also nice to see the backup dancers and singers she had - they didn’t all look like clones of each other. Great diversity. Some of the fans in the theatre could recite the entire movie word for word, lyric for lyric. Lots of dancing in the aisles, cell phone flashlights waving, and cheering / screaming / clapping.

I enjoyed the movie so much I looked up the price of concert tickets. Definitely can’t afford it, but I’d happily see the movie in theatres again.

Just as an FYI, my wife and I got tickets to see her in Warsaw. It's actually cheaper for us to fly to Poland and see her there than it is to see her in Toronto or New Orleans. And Poland is awesome.

We loved the film too for all of your reasons. My wife is very curvy and I am a solid big guy and we were so happy to see dancers who physically looked like us.

Sounds like some of you have a very enthusiastic audiences. Other then a group of little girls who clapped after every song. No one audibly was singing, cheering or dancing.

Yes the prices in Toronto are currently insane :( I live ~10 minutes walk from the Rogers Centre so am considering buying tickets the day of, even if I miss the first hour or so, if the prices come down closer to face value.

My husband actually suggested taking a trip to Mexico City when she had her tour dates there and catching the concert as part of the trip, but I was young(er) and foolish(er) and didn’t realize what I was saying no to! Those were pretty reasonable prices too.

I hope you and your wife have an amazing time in Warsaw :)

If the movie is just some editing of footage from one of her live concerts, not sure this will be more than a one-time thing.

I went to the 3 Gillette shows, the rain show was epic

The movie was a lot of fun, my daughter and her friends got to finally see the concert and they dressed up and were loving it

I don't think it will become a real thing for other artist, a lot of artist will see the money/demand Taylor is making from this and quickly be humbled when they try and do it

In this same thread it's already been mentioned that Beyonce will be doing the same. Yes, I know Swift funded the film. Yes, I know the studios are what they are, but the significance of bypassing the studios will not be an isolated incident. And don't compare this to a smaller act, I've already mentioned Swift had the draw to make this happen. I never said every film henceforth will follow the same model.

Huh? What are you talking about? I only replied to one sentence of yours.

My other comments weren't directed at you specifically.

Everything read in your comment directly applied to the topic I was discussing.

"Studios ultimately fund the films"
and yet,
"Taylor funded the movie"
Right, this time, someone went outside of the typical model. Could it happen again?
"Beyonce"
Yep, it looks like it can!

But Lord Manhammer! Studios ultimately fund the films. How on earth are other artists going to follow suit? Balderdash, I say!

So how did you not pay full price if there are no discounted times? My wife wants to see it at AMC.
It was at a small, independent theatre in Canada.
The matinee price for movies there is crazy cheap. And most of us were out to lunch that it was not regular pricing, due to just being out. We were given a discount, one for children & seniors - without complaining, simply had the money out and ready. I think she was tired of continually explaining the movie was not $8, but $24 (not 19.89 here).

Apparently 32 million people put in for the Toronto tickets.

I think it is great that she has done this - especially for young fans to feel like they at least had some kind of experience with her tour.
