I have a slilly question about the taxi's on St. Thomas. I know you should always ask what the fare is in advance but what about tipping the driver? Does the driver expect a tip and if so how much?
Yes, you should know the fare in advance. The cabs are regulated, so all should cost the same. Some cruise lines give you a list of what cab fare should be for trips to different places on the island. I can't remember if DCL does this, but I think so.
On tipping, yes, the driver is expecting a tip. I usually give around 15-20%, rounding up to the nearest dollar. For example, I'd tip $2 for a $10 cab ride. I'd probably tip $2 for anything less than that, as well. I rarely have a need for a taxi in the states, so most of my taxi experience is in the Caribbean. I don't really know what the standard is, but don't remember any angry scowls from my tips (perhaps they were reserved for behind my back...).
