Taxi vs. rental car on St. Maarten?

We'd like to explore St. Maarten on our own, at our own pace (we're not booking any DCL excursions). We plan to do the Butterfly Farm and some shopping. Maybe some beach time, but not a priority. I got a quote for a 7passenger van for $90 (including tax). Is this good, or should we just plan on getting a taxi? It will be 4 adults and 3 children (10, 8, 6).

Thanks!
Denise

My vote would be to rent the van! It is a great island to explore on your own and on your own time - not worrying about having a taxi wait for you or wait for one to come back and get you. My family and I took a taxi from the Maho Resort to Marigot - mabye 15 minute drive - and they charged us $10/adult and $5/kid. That was return and they did pick us up on time - but we were staying in St. Maarten for the week and had no ship to get back to.

So, $90 is not bad and you are on your own.
