I am going to Disney in just 2 short weeks with my mom and dad. Dad is 67, mom is 63. So while they are not ancient, they are getting up there.;) Dad is in good shape, but my mom has a few issues. She has problems with both of her knees, has had surgery on them in the past, and now has arthritis in them as well.

We are staying at POR, and I am really excited to show them around one of my favorite resorts! But I am worried about my mom. I know she can handle the walking at the parks, but I am concerned about the busses. I don't think she is up to much standing. I don't to worry about her loosing her balance and falling.

So I have been trying to decide if I should rent a car, of just keep some pocket money for taxis. If the lines are long coming back from the parks, we could just alway grab a taxi. But is it just as easy to get one going to the parks? As far as renting a car goes, I could rent one for just over $150 for the length of our vacation. Problem is, I do not have the best sense of direction, and I would most likely be the one doing the majority of the driving.

So which would you do? Do you think it would be worth it to rent a car, just in case? Or should I just keep some extra money on hand and use it to grab a taxi if need be? Or do you have any other ideas?

I would go with the car for the versatility. As for the cost, how long is your trip?

I voted for car, because I always rent a car at WDW for the flexibility of having my own wheels and being entirely on my own schedule. If you use taxis a lot during a week-long trip, you might wind up spending as much in fares as you would have on the rental car.

Don't worry about your sense of direction; Disney signage is excellent. You might still get lost, but follow the signs and they will always take you where you want to go.

However, if you rent an ECV for your mom, forget the car and the taxis - you won't be able to get an ECV into either one. If you rent an ECV, stick entirely with the WDW transportation system. It will take longer to tget where you're going that way, but all Disney transport - bus, boat, monorail - is accessible to ECVs, as are all attractions, restaurants, and rest rooms throughout the property.

I have friends who have rented from Walker Mobility and been very satisfied with the machines and the service. AllEarsNet recommends the other company in Orlando, Care Medical.

Check this page for more info on getting around WDW in a wheelchair or ECV:
