Tax return is nearly $3000 LESS because I worked part-time last year!

Does it ever occur to some of you that that extra money by way of EIC can pay a single mom's light bill for 6 months or fix her car that broke down last month or buy diapers and wipes for a year or help her put gas in her car and help her keep up the maintenence on it while she goes to school?

And its the govts job to take money from one person and give it to another? Really??

Income limits to qualify for the EIC

$43,352 ($48,362 married filing jointly) with three or more qualifying children
$40,363 ($45,373 married filing jointly) with two qualifying children
$35,535 ($40,545 married filing jointly) with one qualifying child
$13,460 ($18,470 married filing jointly) with no qualifying children

I hardly consider a family making $48,362 to be NON PRODUCTIVE members of society. What an asinine statement.

A person making 23.25 an hour is not working poor.

Not fair? Why don't you quit your job and start working at McDonalds full time. Then you can take full advantage of the EIC and enjoy the amazing lifestyle of the working poor!

see now thats funny because i have worked at mc donalds part time and a full time job too at the same time to better myself, so that i can pay for others to not pay taxes, my bad for bettering myself. you have no idea what kinda crappy jobs i have had to work to get to where im now.

Indv. federal and state returns are plan gov control over you and where they want you to spend money. and its still wrong, if i want to give single mother, or someone that JOINED the military money that should be my choice not the governments thru my very hard earn paychecks.

Flat tax is the only way to make it fair i say 5 percent for indv forever. end of story.

They only people we should support is the disabled and the old wise ones.and temp out of work. and no matter how much i make or dont make i will never change my mind.

I was pointing out that the income limits to qualify for the EIC are HIGH. So that negates the whole argument that people who qualify are non productive, lazy, hardly working members of society.

I say write your congressman if you have an issue with the tax law and quit taking it out on everyone else on a DISNEY board :rotfl:

EXACTLY!

BTW, why should renters be entitled to take a deduction? It is not their investment. I rent. It never occured to me that I should be entitled to some sort of deduction. The risk is the homeowner's not mine.

Don't forget the homeowner is also paying property taxes.

I'd rather it be that way than spent on $1,000,000 national park bathrooms or $20,000 shower curtains for politicians ;)

I worked part-time last year earning $6,000. Our tax return is going to be nearly $3,000 less than if I hadn't worked at all-because of EIC. I'm really bummed out. I feel like I worked for a whole lot less now. And I work at a very hard, physically demanding job w/ no climate control! and I had to pay for child care during summer and school breaks.

I need to re-think this whole work thing. I don't mind working, but I don't want to lose money doing it!

.....I feel that you are better needed at home. To be a SAHM to me is the best job you will ever have.:goodvibes

Good luck to you and your military family as I feel this thing about EIC or not EIC is not the and should not be the focal point of this discussion:hippie:.

Where did the OP state that they were a military family?

pretty simple : the income limits are published on the IRS site,as well as the EIC payments for each income level. Plan your income accordingly, if you want to take full advantage of the EIC.

Another interesting note - EIC can be paid to people during the year, as part of their paycheck. It's there to "supplement" the working poor - but I've read articles before which say very few people take advantage of that option.

No idea if those two examples are true or not..

Anyway, overspending in one area justifies wasting money in another, not to mention creating a society where people expect entitlements on the back of the other taxpayers? Seriously, have you been sleeping when they talk about the $14 trillion debt???

My husband was active duty AF and we never qualified for EIC. I'm wondering if some military families that say they've gotten it did their taxes right. And no, DH wasn't an officer, when I was a SAHM he was E4 and E5. We never qualified due to BAH, etc...
If OP wants to be a SAHM that is great, but many of us don't feel like supporting it...me for one. That is a choice you plan and save for...when my son was born our income was cut to less than half because I chose to stay at home.

This is wrong. Not all homeowners can deduct their interest. Only McMansion owners. I get $11,400 standard deduction same as a renter does. I pay interest on my home loan, but I'd have to pay to the tune of about $10,000 in interest to itemize, not the $1500 I do pay.

Why does no one realize that there are 24 hours in a day. Both my wife and I work, we have 2 kids, and there is one parent home at all times with the kids. I work during the day and my wife works during the evenings. She is there for when they are off school, sick, and the summers and I am there in the evenings. You don't need daycare for both parents to work.[/QUOT

Not if you pay property taxes in NJ. Between our mortgage interest on a 1400 square foot home and property taxes it is enough to itemize, and we are near the end of our mortgage. That is even before any charitable contributions.
Those that bought a house during the height of the market around here will be able to itemize for a long long time, even on a 2br 1 bath.

The payout on EIC is a bell curve. Earn very little and you won't get much, earn more and it lowers down to nothing. It's designed to pay the most to people who are working poor (maxes out around $25,000 income I think.) Those who barely work get less, those who are doing better get less.

I won't get the EIC this year because I didn't work at all (since I'm a Master's student in speech therapy). For 2011, I'll probably max it out if I get hired in June. Then hopefully, I'll never qualify again because I'll have a good job. :goodvibes I won't ever begrudge those who do get it, though, even if they buy something frivolous with part of it now and then.

No, wasn't sleeping, but was surprised that tax cuts were continued with such a huge debt.

Like I said, these people have no problem with a family paying no taxes, but as soon as the top tier people don't get soaked as bad as they feel they should, they complain..

You're the one who brought up the national debt, not me. I'm just thinking it was a bad time to extend tax cuts, obviously others feel differently.

I believe in small govt, instead of raping the taxpayers further, its time to cut costs and get rid of the entitlements.. Instead of worrying about the family paying $100K in taxes, why not worry about the guy thats paying none?

So what about the new home buyer credit? The $8k credit that many got for buying a house...is that welfare too?
