So what are the taxes in your community?

My county has just voted in a 1.5% occupational tax for everyone who works here and earns over $5000. The point is to draw more income from those who live in a tri-couny area to support this county's school system.

Our city council is expected to vote in favor of a one cent sales tax which will take us from eight to nine cents on the dollar.

The sales tax is applied to anything purchased - clothing, groceries, fast food, etc. Imagine my surprise when I learned that some communities do not tax food or groceries; I've never known anything else!

What do y'all pay in sales tax?

However, we do not pay tax on clothes and most food groceries (with some exceptions).

where i work: 10% on prepared food items and 5.75% for most everything else

We have no state income tax so what you earn is your own except for Uncle Sam. Our property tax is quite high though.

W have no tax on items purchased in the stores. We have rooms and meals tax so restaurant food is subject to tax and of course hotel stays. Our lottery helps schools but we have a major school funding problem. It has been ongoing for a number of years and no good answers yet.

Some smaller communities do not have a high school so they use our city high school. When your child is in school for 4 years you pay extra tax for those 4 years. While the rest of us pay high taxes for all our lives. Not fair but we did choose to live here. Fact is most of those kids are spoiled brats and seem to cause most of the difficulty in the school system.
