I'm trying to find out if I can deduct on federal taxes my daughter's private school tuition to a primary school. I've read different things and some say yes and some say no. Does anyone know the right answer? or know a web-site that can clearly explain this?

No. It goes something like this, educational expenses may be deducted only when the education is of the same subject matter as ,and is meant to further, your current or prior career.

There may be some exceptional conditions where the education is required as part of some health therapy that is deductible as medical expense.

For example if you sell real estate, you could deduct courses on buying real estate for clients or programming a computer to do real estate transaction paperwork, but not deduct courses on buying antiques or creating a computer video game.

You can't deduct it on your federal return, unless it qualifies as a medical expense. You can deduct it on your Illinois return.

I have a child who has been in private school since kindergarten (he is now in 6th grade), and private school cannot be deducted on your federal return. A number of states, including mine, do allow a deduction on your state return however. In Minnesota you can deduct up to $1600 for elementary school. I believe that deduction increases to $2500 for junior/senior high.

You absolutely cannot deduct private school tuition past K, BUT unless the rule has changed in the past 10 years, private kindergarten qualifies for the child care tax credit if it is part of your day care.
