Hey, does anyone know if Oregonians are tax exempt from sales tax? In Washington any merchandise is tax exempt for Oregonians since we don't have sales tax. Is this the same for merchandise purchased in California?

Do you mean if you buy it in California? As far as I know, what anyone buys in California is subject to sales tax. They don't ask for ID when you shop, unless you write a check.

You have to pay sales tax in California.

The only state I know of that does the tax exempt thing is Washington.

When I used to work at as a clerk at a store and a person from Oregon, we had to not charge them tax. That was about 15 years ago, but just ask. What is the worst that could happen. They could say no, but ask whenever you go anywhere, stores, etc. you never know. I do remember that they had to fill out paperwork to get the tax exempt.

If you buy merchandise which is shipped to your home out of state you will not pay sales tax.

There is also no tax added to park tickets or AP's...thought that was interesting!

Everyone pays sales tax for merchandise as far as I know. What a hassle for the clerks for it to be any other way.

Expect to pay a local entertainment tax on your hotel room as well. By the time we checked out of our room, we realized the $92/night room actually ended up costing us $113/night after all the taxes were added.

We're from Portland, OR and when we went in August we paid sales tax on our purchases. I'm not sure about whether you can get around this by having it shipped, but I would check the cost of shipping versus the sales tax. Have a fun trip. :goodvibes
