Tax due notice from IRS

Today I got a tax due notice from the IRS.

It shows my total tax on return, less tax withheld and payments. The payment is on this statement. Why are they assessing me penalties and interest!?!?!?!?

I called them and their computers are down.

So I called another number and spoke with someone. According to them my return wasn't received until May 1. I asked what the postmark date was and she said they would have to research it. I know I mailed it on time. I took my mother's at the same time!!!! So now I need to send them a letter requesting that my return be researched so they can find the postmark date!!

That's ok...I got a notice from the State of Oregon stating that my tax was wrong...it went from them paying me $100 to me paying them $300. I was like, ummm I don't think so. I called them up and we went through it step-by-step...when it came down to it, they were wrong. They do screw up. They just expect people to bend over and take it.....drives me nuts.

About a year ago I get a tax bill... Well my wife got it and called me at work. The bill was for $23,000. I almost had a heart attack. They said I had failed to report $60,000 in income from a bonus. Well I called and said there is some mistake. They told me that Workhorse (a chassis company for Motor Homes) reported a $60,000 spiff check. Well after a few calls and some kind words I was able to see the problem. They had a spiff program the year before that paid you $200 for select units. I sold 3 of them and was paid $600.00 They forgot the decimal point. So they sent me a paper for $600 and the IRS got one for $60,000.

Well I offerd an easy solution... Send me the $59,400 and I would send the IRS the $23,000... They sent a revised 1099 form to me and a letter to send along to the IRS... It only took about 5 weeks to clear up and about 20 phone calls... But it was taken care of.
