Why the comment about the man being blue collar? Just so the people can picture the stereotype and understand who he is.

Remember the old comment "no shirt, no shoes, no service"? I remember a different time in America when people were more concerned about modesty and not wearing a shirt was considered tacky. Also tattoos were hidden not exposed. I was just wondering what people on this board today felt about people out in public without a shirt.

How about a person not wearing a shirt at a Shopping Mall or eating place?

I'm still not sure why you'd want to invoke a stereotype, especially as you've admitted it is a stereotype. It seems like you want to critique dress (or undress) in America, but that seems to be a separate issue. Or it should be. Issues of tattoos and nudity may have as much to do with age, geography, family background, race and ethnicity, religion and other cultural differences as they have to do with class. As do the values & meanings attached to nudity and body modification.

The "No shirt, no shoes..." comment applies to businesses and health codes. It's a hard comparison to sustain in a reasoned critique, don't you think?

As to whether one's public criticism of someone's appearance, ascribing one's own values to another's behavior, or defending one's use of a stereotype falls within the bounds of good taste....

I never said that I cared if the man showed his body and tattoos to everyone or not. All I said was that it caught my attention and that in the past people were more concerned with modesty and would not go out in public with the tattoos showing and without a shirt. Unless of course you are talking about a beach or swimming pool. I made no value judgement for sake of discussion..

Lets change the question somewhat. What if he was sitting at a restaurant next to you, or shopping at a department store without his shirt on? What if he was not wearing any shoes in public either. Would that be any different?

Depends. Does the establishment in question have a rule requiring shoes and shirts? If yes, then it's not okay. If no, then there's nothing I can say about it.

I can't imagine criticizing someone for taking off their shirt in their own yard. Actually, if he's good-looking, he can take off his shirt in my yard too.

My next door neighbor is a sun loving professional who often works in his yard with no shirt. Whatever.

That said, when people eat outside their own house, yes, they should wear shirts and shoes. IMHO there's a big difference between yard work and eating.

Seeing my neighbor with his shirt off, tattoos or not, while mowing his lawn wouldn't affect me one way or the other.

In a restaurant if there is a "shirts and shoes required" policy then I expect him to abide by them like everyone else. Otherwise, live and let live.

You certainly have some colorful neighbors and relatives. You remind me of a poster that used to share a logon with his wife. I just can't remember the name.

My husband is a blue collar factory worker. He sports two, I'm sayin' TWO tattoos. He is an all American reggler ol' guy. He mows the yard nekkid from the waist up. He sports a belly, which I find rather cute. He also sports a cute lil goatee and two earrings.

WELCOME!!!

I have tattoos on both upper arms, I generally wear tank tops but often wear no shirt at home, and I work in an office. A couple of my neighbors do the same and even if I had a problem with it, it isn't my business. It's nobody's business what someone is doing on their property as long as no laws are violated.

OP, theres a big difference between your questions. In a restaurant, a patron must abide by the health department codes- therefore, shirtless is not an option.

Personally, the guy could be out there mowing his lawn in his undies-I don't care. He likes his tatoos, if he wants to expose them, I'm not going to stress over something that isn't that big a deal.

Same thing I was thinking
I also agree. We have enough problems with property rights in this country so I sure don't want to tell people how to dress on their property.
