Target still being hacked

I did use a credit card during the period of the stolen data. Haven't noticed any fraudulent charges. Not too worried, the card company will cover.

I wonder if they will be able to tell the locations of the stores that were affected. As many as 40,000 cards over 19 days with Target having 1797 stores. Wonder what are the odds are of having your information stolen??? Who discovered the problem - the card companies or Target?

Well, it was discovered on the 15th, so my best guess is some bi-monthly monitoring control of Target's picked up something. But honestly, who knows?:confused3

This has been an interesting thread, and I have taken-away from most of the comments that those of you who don't think "Pay at the Pump" is a problem with card fraud, are the same people who won't take a extra minute or so of your time and take care of the transaction insde the store/at the hut.

Why waste time going inside to use your card? So what if someone hacks your card. My card has been hacked 4 times including the latest Target incident. I have never lost one cent due to a fraudulent transaction. I just call my bank and have the charges deleted and a new card issued. Until merchants start giving customers a discount for using cash I will use my credit card. I am unwilling to give up two free airline tickets per year that I get from using my card.

Right now I don't believe anything target is saying. If you used any card debit or credit save yourself the worry and get a new card. Who is to say when you will be a victim. Why go through the trouble of waiting them having to clean up a mess after.

You could potentially be a "victim" at every single place of business you swipe your card.

I regularly monitored my accounts before this and I will continue to do so.

Exactly! I have had my card numbers stolen before (hasn't happened in this case) and I'm sure I will again. Sadly, unless they make the cards more secure, it's a fact of life right now. That is why I only use credit cards. Chase has caught the fraud long before I could have, they send me a new card, and all is fine.

Of course, it's with any card. I do monitor my cards and rarely use my debit as a credit but for some dumb reason I did during this time frame. I have already dealt with fraud even with my debit card in hand. Thieves are smart, they just put numbers in until they get a hit. I had 4 transaction from California and Texas that totaled 240. The fraud dept caught it. I did notice it on my account as a pending amount charged but not actually removed from my account. After declaring fraud, I had paper work to fill out and a waiting period. It was put back into my account and thank goodness that was it.

To be clear though, I don't believe there is an issue of people being able to hack your identity from "pay at the pump", it's more that if you use a debit card the gas station can put a hold on it for a large sum of money that can cause your checks to bounce.

Wrong....stolen CC info can be common and my husband was a victim of hacking at the pumps. The bank caught it and canceled his debit card and the police was very active at that gas station.

We used our credit cards 3 or so times during the period that Target admits to being hacked then actually used it again on December 21st. I just woke up to a call and email from BOA that we had suspicious charges on our credit card. There were 3 or 4 charges to places like expedia and a few other travel places the first few were declined (i'm guessing they were for over our limit) and the last one was pending. I of course can't be sure it was from Target but we are pretty careful with the card. Haven't used it at any gas stations or restaurants to my knowledge. Mostly just in store purchases at B&M stores. Just keep an eye out on your accounts. Thankfully BOA seems to have acted very quickly.

I just received my "new" target debit card. and I'm not sure if I'm going to activate it or not. Still on the fence about this.

What happens to the account if I don't activate say in 90 days?? Will target close the account ?

I went to my bank and they issued me a new debit card just in case.

I hope 2014 starts out a little better than last year, I think I NEED to go back to WDW and distress.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE :wizard: :wizard: :wizard::cheer2:

Just notified today that our card was compromised. We used it on Black Friday and again for the 20% off. Not sure which of those days it happened. Our bank canceled the card right away and we have a new card on the way. We already have credit protection but wonder if we should sign up for the free service target is offering anyway.

Just tried to talk to a live person at Target Red Card but they kept telling me not to worry if nothing was wrong with my account. Well I want a new card before something happens! Guess I'll have to call again tomorrow & wait to talk to a live person again. Already cancelled my bank debit card & have a new one coming.

Here's the link for the free one year credit monitoring that Target is providing to anyone who wants it. You have to sign up by April 23rd.

I have a Redcard debit card. I didn't shop there during the initial reported breach and haven't shopped there since, but I was a frequent Target shopper with my Redcard. So far, so good. I think I'm going to cancel my Redcard though. Right now it's too difficult to get through to a rep to cancel the card. So, having the free credit monitoring will provide some peace of mind.

For some like me, it's not that simple. My DD is disabled. To go into the store to pay for gas would me taking her wheelchair out of the back of the van, putting her in it and then reversing the process.

Then add weather to the mix (putting on her jacket/taking it off, snow, rain...) and it's not fun.

Here all of the cash pumps are prepaid so I can't fill the van because if I overpaid, I will have to start the process all over again to go and get the refund.

Just got my email from Target yesterday about the free credit monitoring. I do not have a Target credit or debit card. Not sure how they even got my email since I used my Visa card? I thought this only affected their store cards?

You thought the breach only affected Target cards? It affected any card used at the store. The people with Red Cards have a lower chance of trouble, since if they stole those, they would only be used at Target.

Unfortunately, this affected all types of cards - anyone who used a credit or debit card of any type from any bank could be affected. I just received my new debit card from Chase this week and have already closed the card that I used at Target.

I received an E-Mail from Target yesterday, I never made a purchase from Target with any of my cards. I did make a purchase from Amazon and when the item arrived it had shipped from Target I didn't notice that Target was the supplier...the E-mail said that my Name: Address: and E-Mail may have been compromised HELLO that sounds like their On-Line information was also effected...so I'll be calling Amazon for a new card, I have only use it for my Amazon account.

Thank you for posting this info. I just finished signing up.

For those who are reluctant to click on an unknown link in order to provide personal information, you can go to Target.com (type the URL into your browser) and then click on the REDCard link near the top of the homepage. Then click on <Learn More> under the information about the breach. There is a link on the following page that you can use to request your access code for the credit monitoring. You do not need to have a REDCard in order to sign up for it.

The only mail everyone should be receiving from Target is the one sent around 01/15/2014. The e-mail, itself is titled "Important message from Target to our guests", has NO weblinks and has CEO Gregg Steinhafel's signature in the e-mail.

The return address is TargetNews@target.bfi0.com (bfi0.com appears to be something of a "robot" Target uses for communicating in large numbers).

Anything else -- especially if it has links in the e-mail -- is most likely the product of spammers.

Dear Target Guest,
As you may have heard or read, Target learned in mid-December that criminals forced their way into our systems and took guest information, including debit and credit card data. Late last week, as part of our ongoing investigation, we learned that additional information, including name, mailing address, phone number or email address, was also taken. I am writing to make you aware that your name, mailing address, phone number or email address may have been taken during the intrusion.
I am truly sorry this incident occurred and sincerely regret any inconvenience it may cause you. Because we value you as a guest and your trust is important to us, Target is offering one year of free credit monitoring to all Target guests who shopped in U.S. stores, through Experian’s® ProtectMyID® product which includes identity theft insurance where available. To receive your unique activation code for this service, please go to creditmonitoring.target.com and register before April 23, 2014. Activation codes must be redeemed by April 30, 2014.
In addition, to guard against possible scams, always be cautious about sharing personal information, such as Social Security numbers, passwords, user IDs and financial account information. Here are some tips that will help protect you:
Never share information with anyone over the phone, email or text, even if they claim to be someone you know or do business with. Instead, ask for a call-back number.
Delete texts immediately from numbers or names you don’t recognize.
Be wary of emails that ask for money or send you to suspicious websites. Don’t click links within emails you don’t recognize.
Target’s email communication regarding this incident will never ask you to provide personal or sensitive information.
Thank you for your patience and loyalty to Target. You can find additional information and FAQs about this incident at our Target.com/databreach website. If you have further questions, you may call us at 866-852-8680.
