Target return policy

And IMHO Target is much better then WalMart where even if you have a receipt it's highly unlikely the cashier has EVER figured out how to process a refund!

::yes::

A previous poster was right - most Target stores will refuse refunds if you do not have a receipt and they cannot find it. It sounds as if some stores will cave in and allow you to get something else in the department, but I think that's unusual.

Target has this policy because of theft.

And you can't just complain about Target because if you return more than 3 things to Walmart without a receipt, they will refuse to refund to you. I would assume it's most likely the same elsewhere. They are trying to reduce their losses. Can't say that I could blame them...

Wonder how many people who complain about return policies have worked in a retail store. Wonder how many have owned a retail store and experienced return hassles. Been there and have gone through it. Even had a gentleman assault me and treaten my life.

Just saw a news report that some stores are going to start charging a restocking fee on returned items.

Tried to return 2 things to Target w/o receipt and didn't have the right CC on me. They told me I could get something in the same department. I brought it back later with the correct card.

I have!!!

I have some great stories. Got a white fox fur coat back once with makeup ALL on the collar. Lady claimed she bought it that way got very indigiant when I wouldn't take it back!

Got slapped once by a customer when AMEX had me confiscate her credit card.. (This was back in the day when you had to call for authorization)

One of my sales assoicates forged my name on a return slip for a $100 swimsuit cover up... I wasn't at work at the time, but did she think I wouldn't notice I couldn't figure out how I got a return when I hadn't sold one of the stupid things....(We wound up finding THOUSANDS of dollars worth of clothing at her and her best friend's house)

People use to try to bring back clothes they had been wearing for months, they claimed that when the credit dept called about thier past due balance they said you could return the stuff... uh yeah if it's not worn and has tags etc....

And my all time fav. One woman's cc wouldn't work. Called credit, they said her DH cancelled the card. She used the phone to call DH... He announces that he has filed for divorce and cancelled all her CCs. (Took a LONG time to calm her down enough to get her out of there)

Wow! Those are some doozies. My worst one was the kid who brought back a pair of jeans with holes all in the knees, faded out (this was before they were sold that way in the store :teeth: ) - just your typical Levi's 505 jeans. He said they didn't fit and needed to return them. Uh, yeh, I guess not, you've been wearing them for quite a while, so I guess you've outgrown them. Worst thing, my manager made me let him swap them for a brand new pair!

Well, did you work at Sears? Cause I love returning my sons ratty jeans and walking out with a brand new pair!

I can understand why they need a receipt. We did give store credit for returned items without a receipt and people did get mad that they couldn't just get cash, but not a week went by when we didn't have theft so what can you do. Of course, this way they still ended up with free merchandise.

Wow! Those are some doozies.
I can add two more...

I was in the customer service line at our Best Buy one May and overheard a couple of college aged men of middle-eastern origin arguing with the clerk. I could tell they were students at our local university. They were trying to return a wide screen TV one of them had purchased the previous Fall and Best Buy was refusing to play along. They basically were trying to get "free" rental of the TV for their off-campus apartment during the school year and were trying to return it before they flew back home for the summer. They walked out still owning it.

Last month I walked into a sports fan apparel to purchase a replica pro sports jersey. The clerk wrote on the receipt "Final Sale, No Return". I asked her if the jersey was a clearance item. She said "No, it's because of all the people that buy replica jerseys, wear them to a game, and then try to return them the next day.... Food stains, beer stains, and all."

On the OP topic, personally I don't mind storing requiring proof of purchase for returns. It helps keep Target's bottom line lower due to the fraudalent return it prevents and help keep their prices lower. I also don't mind because I know people that used to return items to Target that were purchased at other stores, if they knew that Target also carried them, because it was more convenient for them the items at Target.

Nope - department store that long ago sold out to Dillard's. And I'm not talking about Sears policy about if they wear out before you outgrow them, they will replace them - that I get. If I remember correctly, Sears will only replace with the same size, right?? I'm talking these kids would come in and bring in jeans that who knows where they got them from and want jeans two sizes bigger, no receipt, nothing. Drove me nuts! And even if they did want the same size, we didn't have that deal like Sears does (well, obviously, it was an unwritten policy  ). And Sears only does that with kid sizes, right? Not with adult sizes that people aren't going to likely outgrow.

I returned a pair of pants (brand new with tags) to Target last week. I walked in with my receipt. The (slightly rude) customer service rep told me those pants were not on that receipt. I'm pretty sure it was the right receipt, but it's possible I grabbed the wrong one. (I go to Target about once a week.) So I stood there confused b/c I'm pretty sure it was the right receipt. I can assure you I didn't steal the pants.

Anyway, the girl was like, "it's not on the receipt. Sorry." Basically went on to help another customer. I went back to her and said well give me a store credit. She says "but you don't have the receipt." I said well if they were a gift (let's pretend), wouldn't I get a credit? She said yes and then gave me a credit within a minute. She kind of made me feel like I was returning stolen merchandise (I wasn't!). All in all it was pretty easy, but I think she could have been a little nicer about the situation.

Once I tried to return a $70.00 item to Target. I didn't have the receipt but I was will to take a credit for the lowest price it sold for. No way. No receipt, no return, no credit.

I couldn't use it so I left it on the counter and walked out of the store.

That was 2 years ago and I haven't been in a Target store since.
