I saw this today in the local paper..

http://www.theledger.com/article/20100703/NEWS/7035033/1178?p=1&tc=pg

They are actually doing this at the Target near my home, actually I think it is already done, I havent been there in quite some time..I was wondering how they were gonna do it..Now I am excited to go check it out!!

Anyone else seen the changes yet?

I wonder what it means by "garden center". Ours has hoses, gardening tools, patio furniture, etc. But only in the spring. They are already on clearance for the summer and won't be back until next spring.

Well in my Target, its a whole "outside" area..Plants, furniture, grills, basic supplies for outside stuff were all there. It was outside, but under a cover. Thats also where all the real Christmas trees usually are...

Maybe cause its FL, our garden center is alway full of something seasonal. They are basically walling it in, putting it under A/C and making it more part of the store..

I'm just bummed as I always used the Garden Center registers for quick in and out stuff...

We've never had them in our stores either. Just the seasonal stuff that they sell out.

Our Target added more groceries but didn't phase out the Garden Center.....and it's right next to a Home Depot. I usually get my plants at Home Depot but we do check Target.
We know have fruits, veggies, meats, expanded dairy and lot more "shelf" foods. They also added rows of wine, and a full fridge section of beer and a freezer section with tons of frozen foods, from ice cream to meats. It's really neat actually. :)

We don't have the Garden Center, but are getting the expanded grocery section in a few months. I have no clue where they plan to put them. They have updated the video game section in the past month though.

Our Garden Center was phased out a few years ago. Now there's only one entrance to the store which is a pain. It really didn't make much difference since they enclosed the outdoor area and made it storage for the store.

We still have our outdoor area at both local Targets. Before Thanksgiving they'll start clearancing things to make way for Christmas trees. I always enjoy walking thru the garden area during the holidays to smell the trees.

I would love it if our Target was more like a Super Target. They have great prices on food items. Sometimes they even seem to beat WM. We don't have a Super WM or Super Target anywhere near us. Only time we get to go to one is when we visit WDW.:goodvibes

So is this going to affect the super target's garden centers??

I'm more of a home depot/lowes person for my gardening needs though.

I've never seen an "outside" garden center at Target....only at Walmart's and Meijer's

Ours has a great one and I buy many of my plants there vs. HomeDepot and Lowes. This is sad news to me.. We love our Traget garden center

That's what I'm wondering. We have a Target (no garden center) that's already remodeling and adding to the grocery side. It will be ready later this month. We also have a nearly new SuperTarget (2 yrs) that has a Garden Center. What will they do with all that extra space?

Some of the older Targets, particularly in the southern states, had full-blown garden centers with plants, etc. - I had read those were all going-away in favor of an expanded food section (non-SuperTargets around the country are going to be remodeled and start carrying a larger variety of food items - minus things unique to a "super" such as deli/bakery, etc.).

Much like what happened in the stores in/around Philadelphia, last year...

The "garden stuff" you see in your store during the summer months is only a seasonal section -- longtime shoppers know that section rotates merchandise offerings every few months.

In my neck of the woods, I recently saw the changes at a former "Target Greatland" store in St. Louis -- at that store, they reset the floor plan to the same specs as the newly-built stores and expanded their fresh food offerings to include meats and fresh produce.

This decision is questionable-when I worked a major retail chain in the 90s, the store profit came from Pharmacy and Lawn/Garden. Most else was either marginally profitable or sold breakeven. Our targets don't even have pharmacies, so the profit center is gone.

Based on what I have seen in Target grocery prices, they are higher than Walmart/Kroger/Meijer. People are shopping on cost right now, not so much convenience.

KMart tried this and remodeled into the Big K format, and we know how KMart is performing now.

The Target nearest us closed the garden center several years ago. They still carry some garden items, such as hoses, nozzles, sprinklers and a few other items, but no plants.

We have an insane climate though, and many general nursery plants don't do well here. The Sonoran Desert can be a rather inhospitable place at times!

I've never seen a Target with a garden center in our area. In fact, we only have one old-style Target and I believe that they plan to convert it to a Super Target sometime in the future.

I like Target groceries OK but find their selection limited and their meat and produce more expensive than elsewhere. I still go though because I love the non-grocery side and some odds and ends in the grocery section too.
