I live in upstate NY. We can get by with tees and capris all summer. I haven't been caught dead in shorts and a tank top since my teenage kids were little. But I'm hearing there's no getting around that in August in Disney. So I used my Discover cash back where every $20 gives you $25 in Lands End gift cards and then shopped through Discover saving another $30. And I had a 30% off coupon and free shipping. I was good to go!

I am overweight, the heaviest I've ever been. But I'm short and small boned so a lot of Plus size clothes look weird on me. Landsend has been good. They had petite plus sized shorts, perfect. The tank tops all fit me great (but my bra shows if I lift my arm, I figure it's going to be in the 90s, am I really going to care if my bra shows?).

I'm trying to loose 20 lbs before we go and I've walked the dogs two nights in a row. I know I'm going to walk slow at Disney and this will annoy my DD but I'm doing the best I can. There are to be no family pics this trip. If I get a picture of me and Mickey in my shorts and tank top, I will die on the spot!

do other overweight people have a hard time walking fast enough at Disney? it's embarrassing

I'm overweight and I walk at my own pace. If someone doesn't like it, feel free to make your way around me. I'd guess your DD won't be in such a hurry when she gets in that heat and humidity! Good for you getting out and walking the dog to build your stamina! Keep it up!

Hey there. Another option you can consider are the workout gear-type shirts, they keep you cooler than cotton and you can do short sleeves. Sometimes tank tops are hotter than these shirts because you have the sun shining directly down on your skin.

Just want to give you some encouragement to keep walking and working on your fitness. You will want to be in shape for all of the walking at Disney, so it's smart to start walking a lot now. If you can find a place with a lot of stairs (stadium, building, etc.) that is a great workout for when you work your way up to it. It will be burning the calories up like nobody's business! :cheer2:

Oh don't worry people of all sizes go to disney. Just like everywhere else. Trust me most won't even pay attention we all are so focused on our own family's and vactions. And if someone is rude just ignore them for being rude and shallow. If you have a hard time keeping up i would just let the teenagers do there thing well I watched a show and rested some of the time not most. Your daughter should understand your limits. I'm a commando vacationer my husband is not i had to learn to understand and slow down. Have a wonderful trip:)

I have terrible looking spider veins on my legs and haven't worn shorts in many years. I'm a big fan of crop pants. Another option is pedal pushers and capris. I shop QVC a lot, especially Denim & Co. Check them out. They also sell a lot of gauze shirts which are very comfortable in hot weather. I was just there in April and there were a couple of hot days...high 90's. I hate the heat and I just went out my own pace.

Do not worry about what other people think. Be in some pictures with your family. You might cringe at them but your family will treasure those photos. :)

I went to buy mister fans at CV but those suckers are big and heavy. I found these two blade pocket fans, no water instead. they'll fit in our purses. I hope they help. Bought my generic sunscreen that's right next to neutrogena that I love, it's supposed to be an imitation of that. Had lots of ECBS and a 30% off coupon so that helped.

we're not leaving to August but I swear I'm gonna set up my suitcase soon so I I can add stuff as I get it so I don't forget anything. Can you pack water bottles in a checked suitcase? I'll only bring a few and wash them out. Was going to pack a bunch of snacks but I don't know if we'll need them with the Quick service dining plan

Those mini fans are the best! I used one during my August 2012 trip. The blades spin much faster than the mister fans.

I have some short dresses that are super thin and cool. I like to wear them in the evenings but we go in May/June so it isn't quite as hot.

I don;t like my arms so I stopped wearing tank tops. I wear those dryfit athletic short sleeve tees most of the time and I find them almost as cool as tanktops.

I am not overweight but I just don't care much for shorts. If I do wear them, I wear ones that hit right above my knees. But I usually choose capris while at WDW and we go in early/mid September and it's still quite hot.

I agree with the pp who said to wear the work-out shirts. I wear those while there also as does my dh and my dc. They are a thin polyester blend and wick moisture away from your skin keeping you cooler. They are perfect for that climate and the ones I buy do have a sleeve ;)

Enjoy your trip and do not worry what others think!

I prefer the capris/peddle pushers I hate the idea of my legs sticking on seats..yuck.. when it is hot...so NO shorts for me.. I also like to wear camp style shirts//I try and get ones that are mostly cotton..wear untucked--my upper arms are covered.. and have them roomy enough to be cool. Being covered up is not a bad thing here in FL in Aug,, Spending days all sunburnt is no fun at all,,Better off being covered up.

Honestly, wear what you are comfortable in. Are you going to be hot? Yes. It is Florida in August. You will be hot in capri/T shirt or shorts/Tank tops. The difference is how you feel about how you look. If you are going to be too embarrassed to be in pictures because of shorts then don't wear them. It isn't worth it. I live in Florida and wear capri's pretty much year round.

And please, don't not take pictures. You will want those memories.

Oh, and walking to build stamina is an excellent idea for anyone who does't already do a lot of walking. Size doesn't matter here.

Great idea. Walking to build stamina for a trip is great motivation to get going (and who knows, maybe you'll even enjoy it enough to keep it up once you get back and drop a few pounds).

Agreed - I wear the mesh-type soccer type shorts. They are a bit longer...mid thigh at least. They breath and are nice and light/cool. I pair them with a light weight t-shirt. Some sandals, a pony tail, and sunglasses....August cannot hold me down ;)

We got quite a few mini fans from the Walmart camping section. That is the only thing I ever go to Walmart for....they are small and so powerful!!!

We love August at WDW....so much so that we are doing 2 weeks in 2015.

Lived in FL during my college years. Go to WDW quite a bit in the summer. Yes, it will be hot and HUMID.

I always wear or carry a lightweight shirt or sweater. Floridians blast the indoor AC which is great!:thumbsup2 But really cold if I am wearing only shorts and tanks!

The 2 extremes in temperature make me sick. So I always whip out the sweater indoors. I always make my girls carry their own too after years of them ALWAYS asking to borrow my sweater. Nope Momma needs hers! Lol.

Good luck!

Totally agree with queenofthehive.

abmitch01, don't miss the chance to be part of the memories in your family photos. I lost my dad to cancer in 2010, and I treasure every picture I have of him now. I couldn't care less if his hair was messed, his shirt untucked, or his belly protruding.....those photos are like gold to me.

I get what you are feeling....having struggled with my weight for a good part of my life, I can empathize with your point of view. That said, this is a great article. I read it before every trip. And I now make a point of getting in the picture for my son's sake.

Please, please do not avoid getting your picture taken! Your daughter will look at those pictures years after you've died and not think "oh mom was so fat!" she'll think, "I love and miss mom so much! We had such a great time that day!"

Not to sound melodramatic, but my mom has been gone 14 years now and I cherish every picture I have of her, but especially the ones where she was being silly and fun. She might not have looked like a super model, but she was the most beautiful woman I've ever known.

As for what to wear, I'd wear something that has short sleeves. You'll end up with farmer tan, but that is SO much better than having burned shoulders from not being able to get the sunscreen on. Check out the pooh-sized threads as well. There are a lot of good tips for how to handle heat, rubbing, clothes, etc.

I am overweight, too. Last time I went, I had actually lost some weight. What I did was wear some of my old clothes which were loose and comfortable. It was amazing how much better I felt when wearing loose-fitting clothes. I saved the clothes that fit better for going out to dinner, etc.
