I'm thinking about using one of my CS credits here and sharing with DD who's a picky eater, looking at the Shawarma platter with lamb & chicken but don't know what these things are that come with it. Can anyone explain what hummus, tabbouleh, tangierine cous cous salad are and what they taste like? Would this be a good choice to share with a picky child for a light meal between a 8am character breakfast and 7pm late dinner?

Thanks, Calie

Hummus is a dip made of ground garbanzo beans, garlic, tahini (sesame seed paste) and a little olive oil. Tabouleh is a side dish made a couscous, tomatos, cilantro, etc. Couscous is a small grain type thing that you can cook like rice. If your child is picky they probably would not like this. It is very yummy and flavorful - I have both in my refrigerator right now. They usually give you pita with the hummus so maybe they could eat that?

We ate at Tang. Cafe last Sept. and loved it. Our then 10 yr. old sampled several items and liked them. Our younger children ordered from the childrens's menu. The Baklava is wonderful. All enjoyed it :cool1: And it's included as a dessert in your CS meal if using dining plan. Hope you get to enjoy this yummy food!

Thank you for the detailed description & comments. She loves plain rice but sounds like the cous cous salad is out. I can probably get her to eat the bread (pita) and some meat with the promise of icecream or just use a snack credit for some fruit for her if that doesn't work so I can try this CS. I LOVE baklava, my MIL used to send me a box of assorted baklava every xmas after I told her I liked it. Don't know why she stopped.

Hummus, especially at Disney, is a very mild dish, so she might be okay with it. The couscous salad at the cafe has cinnamon in it and is slightly sweet, unlike the couscous that is served at the restaurant, which is decidedly savory. Hummus is very good with pita bread, so you might be able to get her to at least try the hummus if you're getting the pita anyway.

A minor correction - I don't think the tabbouleh there has cilantro in it. If it did, I wouldn't eat it! (Yes, I have the gene that makes cilantro taste like soap or old socks.) It mainly has parsley and couscous.

I agree that, at least in my experience, tabouleh is prepared with parsley and not cilantro. Also, I wouldn't compare couscous to rice. It's pasta. Imagine holding a few ounces of raw thin spaghetti or angel hair pasta in your clenched hand. Chop that pasta on the end, to form tiny little bits, tiny little squares. What you then have falling onto your table is couscous.

Also: Tabouleh has cracked wheat, not couscous, in it.

It's a Spanish word, that has been adopted into the American lexicon.

Cilantro is the leaves of the coriander plant.

DH got a schwarma platter. This is what it looks like.

I believe he got the lamb one.

I have to say, my DF and I love the Tangerine Cafe. However, my DD, 5 would not even think about touching hummus, couscous or anything on the adult menu there (except the Pita bread). Don't get me wrong---she's not all that picky---but I think the flavors of tabouleh are just a little strong for her young palatte. We go to Epcot about once a month, so I'm sure eventually I 'll get her into it..but not as of yet (I'm a chef on the side, so I try to make her be adventurous)..but she ended up eating a kids pizza (which looked so disgusting to me I almost took it away from her..kids!).

Maybe your grocery stores carries the items. The tabbouleh and couscous salad would probably be at the deli counter, but the hummus would be in one of the refrigerated areas. You could buy some and see if DD likes any of them.

::yes::
Great idea- why wait for Disney to try something new? I :love: that stuff. They carry it at most Kroger stores, but we have a great restaraunt in our area that has the best MiddleEastern food and fruit drinks. :drinking1
