Yep, we visited during our last visit too. We didn't find the food particularly special, but it was ok, and we really enjoyed how unbusy and quiet it was. We sat outside overlooking the DLH pool.
While on the other hand my wife and I particularly enjoyed the appetizers in Trader Sam's; we had the shrimp tacos and flatbread pizza. And the atmosphere is fantastic...the cast members/bartenders really make the place an enjoyable experience.
My family loves this place at night. That's when the ambiance is best. They quite often have a live Hawaiian band playing, and the tiki torches are lit.

I thought it was a shared kitchen between Tangaroa and Trader Sam's. I believe most of the menu items are the same. Perhaps some things like the green beans are unique at Trader Sam's, but the flatbreads and burgers looked the same to me when I compared the two menus when I visited. I think both menus had the shrimp tacos too.
