Act I, Scene 1 – The plane trip and our arrival

I think I researched flights almost as much as Disney itself. I had wanted to try the airline Jetblue, but they weren’t starting Logan service until the day we returned home. I decided to book a one-way ticket down through Flysong and use Jetblue for the return trip. My final step was to contact my concierge pre-planner. I honestly don’t know what the policy is, but I’m guessing that each resort has their own set of guidelines. This was my 4th time staying concierge at the GF and never once have I received a pre-planning kit as I’ve heard other resorts send out. I’ve also only been contacted on one trip at about 45 days out, since then I’ve always made the initial phone call. IMO this is an area that really does have room for improvement.

Now, we’ve been planning this trip for six months and even had a whole week of school vacation to pack our bags and get everything done. Why is it then, that the day of our flight, I’m still running around?

To go back just a little, my husband works in Boston and he had to work on New Years Eve. Not a problem though, the kids and I were going to meet him and do first night together. Well that all went fine, we had a great time as usual. As the evening ends, he decides not to go back and pick up his car. We’ll just head home together instead. Where he works, they have a secure parking garage and as we were leaving for vacation in 2 days, it wouldn’t be a problem to just leave it there until we got back. Thinking nothing of it, we have a nice quiet New Years day complete with my birthday cake and a few small gifts that he had run out and purchased for me an hour before. One of which was a vacuum cleaner, but we won’t go into that. Now we arrive at the morning of our flight. I checked the weather forecast one more time and I was happy with the clothing selection that I had made for this trip. Final thing on my list was to hit the bank. This is when DH drops the bombshell that he left his backpack in his car and now I have to drive him into Boston to pick it up. Now I’ve gone from having all kinds of spare time, to just making it back home before our taxi showed up.

As we drove to the airport, big wet snowflakes started to fall. Nothing that was going to affect travel, but there is something to be said about heading to a warm climate when the snow is falling. We checked our luggage with the skycab and had our boarding passes in all of 5 minutes. Now to face security. On every trip that we’ve taken, I always set off the metal detector. I was determined this time would be different. I had removed all my jewelry, no clips holding my hair back, I had on sneakers and just for extra measure, I chose to wear the sports bra today and leave the underwire in my luggage. With confidence I strode boldly to security. The officer took one look at my boarding pass and a glance at my license and asked me to follow him to a separate security area. Yes, we had been chosen for that extra bit of searching. It actually worked out better, because we were the only one’s in that line and were through that security check faster than the folks in the standard line.

The flight was good with the exception of one screaming child. Seems he was not too happy being strapped in an airline seat and let us all know about that for 2 ½ hours. Because we were flying in the evening, I had decided to spend the night at the Airport Hyatt. When we checked in, I was surprised to find out that my cousin had checked in also. She was the maid of honor at our wedding and now lives in Orlando. We had been in touch earlier in the week trying to make plans to get together. It just worked out that her boy’s were on vacation with their dad and due to fly into Orlando the next morning. We stayed up late, drank margaritas and had so much fun reminiscing about our wedding. She had gotten so nervous, that she fainted right in the middle of our ceremony. It was a wonderful way to start our vacation.

On a side note, the Airport Hyatt makes a terrific option. Normally we would be on the first flight out of Boston so that we could arrive in Orlando by 10am. That meant having to get up at 4am though. Instead, we took a late flight out the night before and got a goods night sleep right at the airport.

Tomorrow, the rental car and the Grand Floridian welcomes us.

we have flown into Logan once or twice and it is a busy place......we still are Maine jetport flyers.....thanks so much for your start of the vacation
