Why wasn't he the main bad guy in the movie? The demon was really the island goddess not the villain. He should have managed to flip himself over and come after them . The nightmare thing who got blow out of the realm of monsters could have gone after them or help Tamatoa. It makes no sense that Maui returns to help Moana without more reason then just to help her?

Ever think that maybe they left him there as a way to transition to a sequel?

I actually do feel like Moana could have used another run-in with a "bad guy" type of obstacle, like maybe the coconut guys. The story is episodic and they don't call back to them (not to mention they are cool). It might have been cool to have them show up at the end to try and get the stone again or to stop Moana from appeasing the goddess.
