Talkin' baseball...

WildCard team plays the division winner with the best record, unless those two teams are in the same division. So, the Red Sox and the Yankees would not meet in the first round. The fact the the A's and Twins might be tied is irrelvant as, they are the respective winners of their divisions.

But it is relevant because in this scenario since the Red Sox can't play the Yankees they then play the division winner with the second best record. And if the other 2 division winners are tied then you have to have a tiebreaker. And in this case it would be head-to-head competition between the A's and Twins.

At least that's the way I understand it.

Thanks for being one of the few on this thread who understoond what I was trying to say! Am I to understand then that they WOULD have a one game play off to see who had the best record? It also has something to do with home field advantage as well.

I think richiebaseball has it right. The theory is the division winner with the better record draws the "weaker", wild card team rather than the winner of the wild card team's division.

Despite the results of the last two Yankees - Red Sox games, I'm not sure I'd want to play the Red Sox in the ALDS!

I am realy undecided about that too! The problem with playing the Yankees is that they have a LOT of playoff savvy players and will really rise to a BIG game. The problem with playing the Red Sox is the former Twins players who will be looking to crash us!

In that case it would be head-to-head competition between the teams.

But, since the question was asked:

They would not have a playoff in this scenario. A head-to-head competition would be which team won the season series between the Twins-A's. That would be the tiebreaker. The only way a one game playoff would be played is if one team would not make the playoffs. For example, let's say the Yankees and Red Sox tie for first place at the end of regular season. If their records are such that the loser would still be in the playoffs as a wildcard then they would look to see which team won more games in the regular season versus each other. The team with the better record is the division winner, the other gets the wildcard. If however the loser would not make the playoffs then they would have a one game playoff to determine the division winner.

That may be as clear as mud.
