Let's pretend that I want to buy a contract through resale. We will probably vacation every year in April, then maybe again during F/W for a long weekend in October. Might switch to every other year, going 3X starting in Jan and finishing in Oct depending on kids' schedules. Which month should I look for?

If you tend to travel in October, January and April then the best use year would be October. This way you could cancel and still be able to bank your points into the next use year.

The second best use year would be September, but here your banking deadline is 30th April. If your trave plans tend to cross 30th April then September is no good, then you need to go for October which has the 31st of May as banking deadline.

It sounds like the majority of your travel will be in April with a weekend in Oct, if that's the case (and you won't start in March), April will be the best by far. Basically you want the majority of your travel to be as close to the start of your UY as possible.

The correct UY allows you to bank your points should you need to cancel your vacation which will happen. You are allowed to bank during the first 8 months of the UY. Pick the UY where the 8 months covers the majority of your favorite vacation months. This is UY not calendar year, forget calendar year, count 8 months starting from the UY month. If not used or banked your points are forfeited after month 12 of your UY. Banking and borrowing are final transactions and can not be reversed.

ok, talk me through this. Let's say we buy 150 pts in a couple of months with an Oct use year. Contract comes with 150 2016 points. They will expire 10/1/2017 if we do nothing, right? If we plan to use them in 2018, I then have to go online and click something by the end of May to bank them for the following year? Can I just book in Feb 2017 for Jan 2018 travel on my 2016 points? Then I have 150 more coming, which I assume would show up in my account on 10/1/2017. Are my 2017 dues assessed at the same time? Thanks!!!

Points need to be available for your vacation dates, not the date you book the reservation. Your 2016 Oct UY starts Oct 2016, currently we are in our Oct 2015 UY. Dues are due at the beginning of each calendar year, not UY.

You'd have to bank the 2016 pts before you could use them for a January 2018 stay.

Your 2017 pts would already show up in your account - just like your 2020 UY points and your 2038 UY points. The limitations on using those 2038 UY points are that 1) you can only book a stay at your home resort at 11 months out and 2) you can only borrow pts ahead for 1 year.

So the earliest you could use October 2017 UY points would be by calling on November 1, 2015 to book a home resort stay starting October 1, 2016 which required you to borrow those 2017 UY points.

UY has nothing to do with when you call to book.
