Ive been wondering this awhile. How does mousekeeping work with all the real dishes? If a guest didn't load and run the dishwasher do they load and run the dishwasher? Or do they just swap out dirty dishes for clean dishes?

My reasoning behind wondering this is if its the latter, could guests starting it be the reason why some DVC rooms are not ready until so late in the day, if its the former shouldn't they inform guests to start it before leaving? If a guest starts the dishwasher before leaving at 11am that whole load has to run through before the room can be fully ready. Which is quite awhile.

never do it. will use dishwasher and run it a day before checkout. will hand wash on checkout day. never know if there will be a problem, like a leak, so we leave dishwasher empty on checkout.

I hate hand washing dishes; so I make sure that the dishes are in the dishwasher and running before we leave. It's one less thing for the mousekeepers to deal with. I also tend to wait until the dishwasher is full before running it; so by the time we leave, it's mostly full.

There are many reasons why some rooms are not completed until late starting with how many rooms mousekeeping must do per day. Back when I still worked in hotels, housekeepers generally did 12 or 13 rooms per shift and the work hours began at 8:00 am and ended at 4:00pm. Obviously, some rooms would be done early and some later.
As for the dishwasher, I’m a bit OCD and start packing and cleaning the day before we leave. If some dirty dishes remain I put them in the dishwasher and leave the door open.

I can think of many other reasons why rooms aren’t ready but guess this answers your specific question 🙋🏾‍♀️

DVC is notorious very very late checkins often times well after 4pm, which isn't the norm in the hotel industry which is why I was thinking about the dishwashers, not that other hotels dont have them its just alot more rare for a room to have a dishwasher in it.

I voted no, but we also don't leave any dirty dishes for Mousekeeping. At most we might leave dishes from breakfast in the drying rack.

We always load and run it. We also put all our dirty towels in one place so easy to pick up. Plus, we empty the fridge and freezer. We appreciate the great work they do to prep our villa so we do what might help them to prep for the next guest.

We try to run it the night before, but sometimes right before we leave the unit. That kind of depends on whether someone is using one of the Murphy beds or pull-out couch. Many of the DVC dishwashers tend to be quite noisy. :headache: We tend to have very early airport pick-ups, so the length of the cycle doesn’t matter much.

We don't run the DW at all since we only ever use 2 mugs and a spoon and maybe, once in a blue moon, 2 wine glasses (we only do short stays). So I hand-wash them and put away. I caught snark and a lecture for that on here before. Was told I needed to run the DW, so as to kill the germs, in a rather snooty way. First of all, I am not wasting the water and energy to run a DW for 3-5 items. Maybe that person doesn't care about that. Also, not everyone has a DW at home so guess that person wont eat at their houses. And also, pretty sure we don't have deadly germs in our mouths. We, maybe that person does, but WE don't go to resorts if we are sick with a contagion. And if worries about things like flu or covid then maybe don't go to Disney at all.

Sorry, always wanted to get that out. Anyway...we don't run the DW. But I do bet that many folks don't either but leave a lot of dirty dishes for the housekeeper to then load and run the DW. Though I am not sure that's why rooms are often ready on the late side. I think it's more understaffing. Maybe late check outs...which I never thought we were allowed to have but have recently heard of folks getting them. And probably folks leaving big messes. Us on the Dis are aware of time share etiquette because there are threads about it. But a majority of DVC stayers aren't on here and likely are clueless to such things as cleaning the dishes and gathering dirty linens and trash. I think the housekeepers have a lot of work and have many rooms to do.

I also think whatever way they let the back office know a room is done and ready...that isn't smoothly done all the time. We had club level at AKV not long ago. I sat in the lounge watching the floor. I could see 1 housekeeper working on the right side. I was told our room wasn't quite ready. I sat all day and watched while enjoying the lounge as I was waiting for the hubs to arrive after work. He arrived and little before 5pm. We sat a bit longer and I asked a couple times but kept being told they were still cleaning it. I think it was shortly after 5 when we got it. It was the 1st on the left that had nobody go in or out the whole time I sat there. So, guess someone didn't punch in or alert or whatever...that it was ready until maybe they were clocking out for the day. Even though it was ready the whole time.

I thought this thread might be about the really cool little dishwashers in the studios at the new Polynesian Tower and how well do they perform….😁
(I am still a little curious). I would love to try them out 😉
But, anyways, in regards to the actual question-we always start the dishwasher on departure- full cycle with dishwasher detergent.

ohh I didnt know about these. I bet they are super cool! A DW in a studio, amazing.

I’m betting housekeeping cannot assume the dishes are clean, and run the dishwasher regardless.

That is what I have always heard and assumed as well. In any case, I do load and start the dishwasher before we leave anyway. I have had times where I left something soaking in the sink from cooking in the AM and the mousekeeper washed and put it in the dishwasher and started it while I was out for the day. That kind of surprised me.

Wow, I didn’t know some people HAND wash and put dishes/glasses etc back in the cabinet rather than using the dishwasher. If they are hand washing for their own use…fine. But, I’d prefer dishes washed by the DW before my family uses them. Guess I will now have to put the dishes I think we will use in the DW to START my week’s stay. 😩🤪

It's standard to load and run the dishwasher at other timeshares. Or, at least hand wash all the dishes. So, I just do it wherever I am.
Yes, we had experience with multiple other timeshares before DVC, so it's a routine to load and start the dishwasher before leaving. Some timeshares leave a list of things you're required to do, or risk being charged for leaving the place too dirty! DVC is a timeshare-hotel hybrid, so they don't do that.
