As a DL novice/newbie I am unfamilar with trading pins. I have been seeing threads about where to get them and I am intrigued. Please share!!!

Some people collect to collect them, some collect to wear them, some collect to trade them. You can trade in the parks at some pins stations, with most CMs wearing them, some CMs only trade with kids, and trade with pin trading guests.

Trading pins can be so fun! Unless they are wearing teal colored lanyards CMs have to trade with you (teal is kids only) as long as they don't have pin you want to trade with already. Most concierge desks have pin boards as do some stores. it's fun trying to collect sets by scoping out cast member lanyards! However always be polite and ask to see their pins.

There are also pin traders who are guests who do not have to trade with you and require equal equity pins...there are limited edition pins that only release a select qty, etc. some pins are so beautiful! We try to limit ourselves to our favorite ride or places we've stayed, themed pins. It's fun and it's a topic of conversation with other people when in line, etc. I recommend it! How far you take it is up to you! :-)

buy pins online (mousepins online . com try it) they are the best and not once have i got fakes. buy online and trade with the cms for alot of fun its something my son and hubby both love to do we all have to have enough to play with four days in the park we like 10p[ins each so 30pins all together normally costs us 55 or so for grab bags)

So are CM's required to trade or is it just something they generally do?

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe CMs can choose to wear pins. If they have the pins on they have to trade with you unless they are wearing a teal lanyard, and that lanyard is for children only. Also, I think you are only allowed to trade 2 pins at once with each cast member.

Ok cool. Thanks for the quick answer snoangel!:thumbsup2

Some CMs choose but some are assigned to wear them. Basically those Pins are Disney property, part of the costume, more often than not.

Not all CMs are wearing lanyards. You will find a lot in less busy positions, not loading rides or working popcorn carts, who have a sash with a little booklet on thier hip. These CMs are pretty obvious along the streets and the color coding for kids only applies with them as well.

There are also pin trading stations, with big displays of for sale pins, and binders to looks through for trading. These stations can have some short waits. Also in stores the CM smay have a booklet of pins behind the counter to trade with.

Good to know! :)

My daughters really enjoyed it this past trip. I bought 10 on ebay that they traded, but it wasn't enough. So, Disney had one of those purchase with purchase deals and was able to get each girl a lanyard wit 8 pins for about $19. They had a blast. Another friend bought 50 on ebay for $100 for her three kids to share.

My son loves his pins, (he's 13). He had a great time trading them when we went to DL last month.

He will sometimes get them off of eBay but, you have to be careful when you purchase them. A lot of them are "Scrappers" fake pins. I bought him some pins off of eBay to trade for our trip and they were all fake!!!! So, be careful. If you Google "fake Disney pins" they will tell you how to spot them. Chances are if you buy a lot of 25 pins off of eBay for $12.00 they are fake. The fake ones look pretty good and a lot of people don't care that they are fake, some do. My son was happy to get them but he didn't want to trade the fake pins at Disneyland so, he took is real ones to trade. He felt it was dishonest to trade the fake pins.

I purchase trading pins on ebay before each trip. My family loves to do this..just for the fun of finishing off a collection that appeals to us. My DD5 goes for the princess and Duffy pins. If you purchase them from the stores in the parks, it can get pretty pricey. I use the same vendor on ebay each time because I know them to be reputable. I just recieved 75 pins for our trip for $48. Not bad!!:thumbsup2 On our last 2 trips, a CM stopped my DD5 gave her a special pin!! She holds onto them like treasures and I have never seen anything like them. I think it is nice that CM's go out of their way to do these things. Also, I have run across a few CM's that used one side of the lanyard to trade park pins, and the other to trade for their own personal collections. I like to discuss pins in line with other pin collectors, helps make the time go by! :goodvibes Often I will see a little tike who is collecting pins for the first time and I will allow them to pick a pin off of my lanyard to help get them started..I like to help with the magic!! :wizard:

Also, the CM has to trade you if they have a pin you want...as long as they do not have one of the same pin you are trading.

I have to admit, it bums me out when I read of people buying a pin lot for a "too good to be true price" from ebay or one of the various websites out there. I have a hard time believing those pins are legitimate Disney pins and therefore, tainting pin trading in the parks.

There is a really good thread that lists some reputable ebay sellers. http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2213419

I said, specifically about the pins, "this isn't something I want to get into because I don't need to be collecting a bunch of things I don't need." Because of the trading market, I worried that in order to enjoy it, you'd have to spend a lot of money. After further discussion with DW, we decided that we will each pick a pin or 2 representing what was meaningful to us for that trip. For example, we just went for our anniversary and picked up "Mr." and "Mrs." pins. Or get a Christmas themed one for when we went after Thanksgiving.

Also having a pouch to hold my FPs, park hopper and even credit card is incredibly convenient.

Also I don't think I'd wear full set of pins the park...would get tiring on the neck.

My girls got into trading last year. We took 25 pins for the 6 days. They were gone by day 2. This time I am going to get them about 100 each. We bought a bunch also. They can get expensive...ours did. But, they look so nice on their walls.

ive heard alot on ebay have been fakes be careful at least the one ive gone to for the last 5 years have been real and they dont give me any of the bad pins ive read about. be careful not to get scammed but have alot of fun

I don't think it's fair to trade pins that you pay around $8.00 at DL for a pin that someone has bought on eBay for less than a dollar. It seems like you are cheating the people who bought the real pins. But people do when they buy the lots off of eBay. My son loves the "fake" ones that I purchased for him off of eBay. I didn't know about fake pins when I bought them. The only reason we found out they were fake was, the color wasn't as good as the rest of his pins and we looked into it and found out why. My son left his cheap fake pins at home and did not trade, them. He didn't think it was right to trade the fake ones. It sounds like everyone brings the fake ones to trade, next time we go I guess that is what we will do to. But, i guess people think pins are pins The scrappers and the real pins have the exact same design, the scrappers are only cheaper.

This is going to sound preachy and I am sorry for that, but why not encourage your son to stick to his values? Who cares what 'everyone else' is doing? What better opportunity to teach him could you hope for?

I have to agree! Doing it just because "everyone else does" only perpetuates the problem. Perhaps when you get ready to trade in the park you can look closely at the other persons pins to try and determine if they are fake. If the color is off then don't trade with them?? :confused3 TEach your son that it's ok to be different, especially if he is making the RIGHT choice.

I agree.

I had no idea there were fakes until someone informed me yesterday - apparently a lot of the "pining for pins" ones in Disneyland are fakes. Most of my pins are collectables and/or of good value and I wouldn't want to trade them, so I was gonna do the eBay thing but I just don't feel right knowing good and well that I could be giving some unknowing person a fake. I would hope others would feel the same way, but unfortunately a lot don't. Makes pin trading less fun, but I'm more of a collector anyway.
