As a DL novice/newbie I am unfamilar with trading pins. I have been seeing threads about where to get them and I am intrigued. Please share!!!
So are CM's required to trade or is it just something they generally do?
Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe CMs can choose to wear pins. If they have the pins on they have to trade with you unless they are wearing a teal lanyard, and that lanyard is for children only. Also, I think you are only allowed to trade 2 pins at once with each cast member.

Some CMs choose but some are assigned to wear them. Basically those Pins are Disney property, part of the costume, more often than not.
Not all CMs are wearing lanyards. You will find a lot in less busy positions, not loading rides or working popcorn carts, who have a sash with a little booklet on thier hip. These CMs are pretty obvious along the streets and the color coding for kids only applies with them as well.
There are also pin trading stations, with big displays of for sale pins, and binders to looks through for trading. These stations can have some short waits. Also in stores the CM smay have a booklet of pins behind the counter to trade with.
Also, the CM has to trade you if they have a pin you want...as long as they do not have one of the same pin you are trading.
I have to admit, it bums me out when I read of people buying a pin lot for a "too good to be true price" from ebay or one of the various websites out there. I have a hard time believing those pins are legitimate Disney pins and therefore, tainting pin trading in the parks.
There is a really good thread that lists some reputable ebay sellers. http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2213419
He didn't think it was right to trade the fake ones. It sounds like everyone brings the fake ones to trade, next time we go I guess that is what we will do to.
This is going to sound preachy and I am sorry for that, but why not encourage your son to stick to his values? Who cares what 'everyone else' is doing? What better opportunity to teach him could you hope for?
whoopsiedoodle said:I have to agree! Doing it just because "everyone else does" only perpetuates the problem. Perhaps when you get ready to trade in the park you can look closely at the other persons pins to try and determine if they are fake. If the color is off then don't trade with them??TEach your son that it's ok to be different, especially if he is making the RIGHT choice.
