I know it's a lot of shops, restaurants etc... Is it worth trying to spend an afternoon there with kids (8 & 5)? I know about the Lego store which I do think would be a hit, and the bowling alley (they love to bowl). What else is there of interest?

Also, I keep seeing horror stories about parking/construction/getting to/from there. We have our own rental car, so just how bad will it be this summer? Is there transportation that we could use?

You can take Disney bus transportation if you want, but you can also drive. I drove a couple weeks ago for an early afternoon arrival time and it was fine. It's a BIG parking garage - but I got in right away. When I was leaving (maybe 4 pm) - there was a bit of a back up to get into the garage, maybe about 8 cars? But it was MOVING, not stopped - just slow. Now - that was Spring Break time, not summer.

If your kids like wandering through shops and seeing stuff - it can be fun. There are several stores appealing to kids. Plus - some fun places to get food. Bowling alley will take alot of time. It's a fair amount of walking. If your kids like going to the shopping mall, they will like it. If taking your kids shopping is a nightmare - you might think twice.

IMHO not with all the current MESS. I was there mid March and even with WDW transportation it was a long, MESS to get to DTD.

Unless your kids like shopping, shopping and more shopping, there isn't much outside the Lego store for kids.
