Talk to me about bikes for kids... Can I get away with cheap ones?

We need to get bikes for the kids. They've outgrown their old ones. They're still growing, so I don't want to spend a lot of money, but I do want to get bikes that won't fall apart. Here's one similar one 12yo DS wants (a Honda Mountain bike, on sale for about $100

BTW, he's a big kid, already 5'10" and headed on for well over 6'. He would mostly be riding it around the neighborhood and on paved bike paths.

I know NOTHING about bikes. I do know that we need to measure them, but not how. I also don't know whether it's worthwhile to spend more on kids bikes, or if I should just get the relatively cheap ones we've seen.

The 12-14 year old set around here (MA) seem to favor Haro bikes. They are like trick BMX bikes. They are pricey, upwards of $300! I think what you need to take into consideration is if your kids use them a lot, then spend the extra money to get something that will withstand the wear and tear expected from kids that age. I'm not familiar with either of the brands you're looking into. Just make sure you get helmets! (spoken like a true EMT!)

Like most things, you really do get what you pay for.

If your kids really ride a lot, they will appreciate the performance found in a "better" bike.

Check out your local bike shop. They should have some entry level bikes which will be a step up from what you'll find at the discount stores. Plus, you'll keep the money "at home" versus giving it to some far off corporation.

If you go to a local bike shop, they'll make sure the bike is the correct size for your children.
