I hate the paper straws. But I also don't like carrying around a mug. It's allowed, but I am usually without backpack or any kid of bag, so the mug quickly becomes a pain to carry. I tried it once or twice - the best solution when going without a bag was to bring a carabiner with me, so I could clip the empty mug to my belt loop on my shorts to at least keep my hands free.
I usually bring my own straw with me (it's a world-killing, climate-change inducing, bird slaying, evil poisonous PLASTIC straw - but I don't throw it away in the parks - I keep it with me all day and bring it back with me. Every time I get drinks throughout the parks, I can just pull out my handy old-fashioned straw and enjoy my drink for as long as I want (with paper straws, I sometimes have to go through 3-4 of them when I'm nursing a drink as they saturate and become worthless before I finish...the bamboo and sugarcane ones are definitely better, but still a little weird on mouth feel - can't beat good old plastic for that).
