Last fall I posted about the feasibility of taking my 89 year-old mother to Disney World. I received a lot of great advice and suggestions and decided to take my mother on a WDW trip the beginning of December, 2006. We stayed at the Wilderness Lodge Villas for 6 days. I ordered a scooter from a local company and they delivered it to the lodge. My mother also had her own 4-wheeled walker. Between the two, we were able to go everywhere in the parks. We took the bus and the boat for transportation and it worked out perfectly. She adored being able to scoot around the park. My biggest mistake in planning was to think that she would need a nap each afternoon. She never took a single nap because she was afraid she would "miss something."
We took things slow and easy. I knew my mother would enjoy the landscaping and flowers and we spent a lot of time just sitting and looking at areas of the park that everyone else rushes past. She marveled at the Christmas decorations and the Orbourne lights were a highlight for her, along with the Candlelight Processional. We ate at Crystal Palace and the Garden Grill and she got such a kick out of meeting the characters. We did the rides that were suitable for her and she loved them all. It was a wonderful time.
My Mother died suddenly 5 months later and I am so thankful that we were able to share such a wonderful experience. To any of you considering a trip with parents, or grandparents, I would strongly encourage you to do so, and don't put it off too long. These are memories I will treasure forever.
