Taking kids out of school..any problems upon return

The nine-year-old lass we took on her first visit to WDW last December didn't have any issues. However, she attends a public school where children frequently miss time to travel with their parents. Most are entertainment industry professionals--producers, directors, etc.--and the school tends to work with them rather than against them.

She missed 8 days of classes in December, then returned for a few days before Christmas vacation. She's well ahead of her class (will be skipping fifth grade in the fall), so her teacher didn't assign any work. However, her parents did! *LOL*

We've never had a problem, and we've taken dd out in K, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. We've always asked the teacher first- they have always said "no problem", they have always gotten some work together for her, but never too much work. DD has always gotten all A's, and started gifted classes this year. I think this will be the last year we do let her miss for a trip. DD felt that the make up ework was too much upon return (though she got it all done), and that is mostly because she is always so busy with other activities after school that her extra time is limited.

I absolutely would not hesitate to pull a cchild out of first grade.

If you are concerned about school policies, I would ask other parents at the school for their experience.

Nope, kids have never had any problems after they return. Have been taking them out since preschool up to 3rd grade this year.:thumbsup2

As a former MS/HS teacher, I give big kudos to all the parents who actually make their children do the work given by the teachers. :thumbsup2 I never, ever minded having kids pulled out for family vacation, but 9 times of out 10, the work I gave ahead of time was not completed upon the students' return. I finally quit giving work early and let the kids make up work when they got back. I'm happy to see so many parents take the completion seriously even if the work isn't exactly what they thought it would be. ::yes::

This past october we took my 11 year old nephew with us for a week to Disney World and his teachers gave him some stuff to do to keep him up to date with school. He did it on our 12 hour drive there and the 12 hour drive back. He was fine when he went back to school. She also asked him to write a paper about the trip when he got back and got to read it in front of the class and show pictures and his mom made a mickey mouse cake for all the class to eat after.

we are definitely taking our son out for 4 days in Oct, but now we are juggling the idea of going again in Jan 2009 since we are buying APs. Our son is entering 3rd grade and is reading at a 5th grade level, academically there is no issues, just an issue of if the school gets upset. Trying to figure out how to and the situation. A friend of ours has a son in the same class and she works for the school and says she would not hesitate to take her son out for two vacations, and she has(also a DVC member).
