Taking DD to NYC for her 13th bday. She would like to see a broadway show, are their any reputable websites to order discounted tickets ?

I would also would like to take her to out to eat, somewhere nice but not crazy expensive. I have read post that suggest Ellens stardust and while the venue seems entertaining my daughter is not really impressed with diner type food.

Any suggestions for a nice place to have afternoon tea ???

We spent 10 days in NYC while my DD was taking a training program with the Rockettes. As far as show tickets go, you can get them for that same evening through TKTS at about 40%-60% off, BUT you have to pay cash, wait in line for them in Times Square, and you won't know what shows are available until that day. It really works better than it sounds, but check out their website.

I found that many of the shows hand out discount coupons in Times Square; you take these directly to the theatre and buy your tix there. We saw "chicago" and "Lion King" this way. Once again there's no guarantee what theatres/shows this will be available for, but it's easy, you can pick the show date/time you wish, and you can pay by credit card.

Restaurants are expensive, but one of the more reasonably priced we found was Becco. It's owned by Lidia Bastianich, who you might know from TV. Check out their website. At dinner, they have a pasta flight which is unlimited servings of 3 or 4 different "pastas of the day), includes bread and bean dip (maybe olives, too) for $22 plus tax. They also have really good food... I had osso bucco and it was about $30, I believe, which is a steal for a nice NYC restaurant. They are more downscale, but DH was glad he was wearing a button down shirt with Dockers and I had on capris with a nice shirt. DD16 wore her dress. You could wear nicer shorts, but we were glad we were a little more dressed up. I think Becco is on 10th and maybe 52nd street? It's west of Times Square. Check their website.

Whole Foods in Columbus Circle has an amazing food court, with many different food bars: salad, cold mixed salads (like potato, etc), hot foods, asian, indian, picnic, sushi... a whole bunch of stuff, with a sit-down area or take out across the street to Central Park. Much more affordable than a restaurant, with really good, "real food".

It is expensive but my DD6 and I did afternoon tea at the Plaza in May. They just finished a multimillion dollar renovation to restore the The Palm Court which is where they do the Afternoon Tea. It was really beautiful and she loved it. We got all dressed up for it and she was complimented by all the older women there as they said it's rare to see young women dress up proper for tea these days. :goodvibes
I figured it was a one time thing and so I didn't mind the splurge. We also then checked out FAO Schwartz and American Girl Store.

You may want to check out broadway.com as well.

I've used them twice for tickets and had good luck.

:)

For discounted show tickets, join the Playbill Club at playbill.com. It's free to join, and it will allow you to access discount codes for various shows. They also sometimes have discounts for restaurants & other non-Broadway attractions. Also check broadwaybox.com for discount codes - a lot of times they have the same codes as Playbill, but sometimes different ones pop up on there.

Does she want to see any show in particular, or are you going to choose one?

You can sign up for discounts for some shows at Playbill.com

It's not budget, but I love high tea at the Four Seasons.

I recommend broadwaybox.com for tickets and or google broadway student rush.

We had tea at Oscar's at the Waldorf Astoria, very nice, but very expensive. Enjoy!

i like ruby foods in times square area. its reasonably priced and since its asian food you can order a dish or two and share to cut costs. im sure they have tea too. the decor inside is nice - has a fancy feel but i have gone in tees and jeans and its never a problem. i used playbill.com for discounts, plum benefits also offers discounts- it is available thru many employers if you or someone you know has access to it you just use a generic code to get a discount over the phone or online.

I agree that Ruby Foos is good fun - but it is definitely not a tea place!

Wow, thanks guys for all the ideas. I need to get started checking out some of these websites :)

@ Ava, I am really not sure what we want to see. I had mentioned Wicked to her and she seemed really interested. Then we heard Mary Poppins was playing so prob between those two. Wish I would have been able to get the Free Mary Poppins tickets that someone had posted they were offering on Facebook, that would have been perfect since sept 10th is her bday.

Check out Mousesavers. They have a discount on Mary Poppins tickets sometimes available...

You will not get discounted tickets for Wicked, but it's up a level from Mary Poppins. Your dd would LOVE it - dd14 has seen it twice already. For discounted tickets, I got to broadwaybox.com.

I agree with the suggestion of Broadwaybox for discounted tickets. My teenage daughter loved Mama Mia and you should be able to get discounted tickets to see it. Wicked is her favorite though, but I don't think you can get discounts for it.

Do not go to Ellens for dinner, maybe dessert if you really want to see it, but the food is not very good and it is way overpriced.

I like Balthazar - especially for brunch. It is in SOHO, which our teenagers thought was a really cool area of New York. It is not cheap, but nothing is in NYC. If you go there plan to spend some time walking around, shopping and taking in the sights. You will have to make reservations early though.

This poster is right on with broadwaybox.com for discount codes. This site will list the offer code and link you to Ticketmaster or Telecharge to enter the code and buy tickets.

I've never been to a broadway show. It looks like Wicked is playing at the Gershwin Theatre. How are the seats set up in there, idk what orchestra, or mezzanine are? Is it set up like a movie theatre? Coliseum? I want to get tickets where we can see but 300.00 a seat is way more than I can spend.

John's Pizzeria in Times Square has excellent pizza, decent prices, and it is located in an old church (nice decor).
