Taking advantage of airline cancellation policy

Here's a question. Does the flight you used the credit on have to fly by one year out? Or can you purchase within a year for a flight that is maybe 16 months out?

For example: If I know I want to fly in June of 2021 but get the credit today, could I purchase the tickets in, lets say, Jan 2021?

Travel must commence by that date.

The Delta policy doesn’t apply to me since my flight isn’t until May, and they are only allowing it through the end of April. Not even sure if it would apply even if they extended it through May since it is a Westjet flight though purchased through Delta (anyone know how that would work in a situation like this?).

I already have it in my head that I am going to lose the $$$ paid towards this flight. Even if they did offer a credit, if it is good only by the date of purchase, that would be in December and I have no plans of going anywhere this year anymore. I will just hang on until the bitter end hoping they cancel on me and rebook me on a significantly different flight so that I can tell them I don’t like the new flight and get a full refund. When I last checked on my flight, it isn’t even at 25% capacity so I have hope it could still happen 🤞

On another thread, someone clarified that you have 12 months from the date the new eVoucher is created (not the original ticket purchase date). I'm not 100% certain of what their actual practice is, but I'm in the same boat as you....purchased my ticket July 2019.

Keep an eye out for flight cancellations or changes. If they cancel your flight, you can get a refund. If they change the time of your flight by more than a certain amount (maybe 30 minutes??) you can request a refund.

That would be better for us, although there's still no guarantee we'd be able to use it. The way the policy reads online is:

"customers may cancel their reservation and apply any unused value of the ticket toward the purchase of a new ticket for a period of one year from the original ticket issuance. "

That's why I thought it was from purchase date. However, they also say:
  • New Ticket Must Be Re-issued On/Before: Dec 31, 2020
  • Rebooked Travel Must Begin No Later Than: Dec 31, 2020

Just in case someone with Italian flights is reading this, for Italian flights it is through the end of May. You have to keep reading down the page (and that wasnt obvious to me at first) until you get to the Italy section.

That would be awesome if true, although it makes the below wording even more confusing.

Ive already had one move (pre COV concerns) I have to see exactly what my options are with respect to that as well.

That bolded bit confused me too. I am guessing it is a whichever occurs first kind of deal. For me its the difference of November and December so I cant say it even matters all that much to me.

Today, some airlines announced that they are providing cancellation for no fee. That's a full refund.

I bought my tickets about a month ago for $4k, and the prices today are about half that.

Has anyone considered cancelling and rebooking to save some money?
My airline is only doing credit. The flight I booked is almost $600 cheaper. I wish I could get the difference.

Has american Airlines cancelled a bunch of flights yet? I have one booked for 3/25, I’m hoping if they cancel it then I will get a full refund? Does that make sense? Thanks!!!

If they cancel, you will get a full refund back to your original form of payment.

Not related to a cruise, but I had a flight on American to Atlanta for 4/7 and they cancelled the flight and moved us to a new one. I was able to call and get the entire flight cancelled and refunded back to my card. The refund hasn't landed yet, and they said it could take 10 days.

My flights on american next week are still ‘on time’. Did you get a notice saying they were moved?
