Taking advantage of airline cancellation policy

Today, some airlines announced that they are providing cancellation for no fee. That's a full refund.

I bought my tickets about a month ago for $4k, and the prices today are about half that.

Has anyone considered cancelling and rebooking to save some money?
 
Ha! Was just thinking this an hour ago. Felt a little slimy doing it, but then again American Airlines has never done me any favors. It worked out (for now) to only save $50. Not worth the hassle. But I’m going to keep an eye on it.

What airlines are giving refunds? I thought they were just waiving change fees.

I am actually a bit confused by the airline cancellation policies. I had a Delta flight booked for early April (for a conference). The company I work for has banned all non-essential business travel, so I cancelled the flight.

The official Delta posted policy for flights between March 1 and April 30 said, ".......You may choose to cancel your trip, and use the value towards a future flight. You may cancel your flight and apply any unused value of the ticket toward the purchase of a new ticket for a period of one year from the original issue date."

However, when I cancelled my flight, I received confirmation that the entire amount of my flight would be credited back to the credit card used for the original booking.

So now I'm confused as to what the actual Delta cancellation policy/practice might be for my upcoming Hawaii cruise, should DCL decide to cancel the sailing.
 
We have a Delta flight tomorrow and we are debating cancelling our cruise this weekend. It would be nice if Delta just gave a refund

Did you have a refundable fare booked? I have flights booked with Delta for next month and will be canceling. I've been holding off to see if the cancellation policy changes.
 
I cancelled mine, and didn't get a full refund and was charged a cancellation fee. I'm on a4hr call back hold... Good to see Delta is making this easy...

When was your flight scheduled? Within the stated March 1 and April 30 window? or later?

Offering a credit for a future flight and a full refund are different things. With Delta, I can get the credit for a future flight with no fee, but the credit has to be used by the one year mark of when I purchased the tickets, which only gives me until mid-October. It would be nice if they would at least extend the deadline until the end of 2021.

Thanks. I would call a full refund a cash refund, not a future credit. Its nice the airlines are offering this but I was hoping for an actual cash refund when I read your post.

Same boat but early November. I doubt we will switch to a fall Italian trip so that means that we will likely be booking a first class ticket somewhere in the US to use up all the credit we have for our FCO Business class tickets.

I am holding on for awhile longer. Our tickets are for May so we will see how the quarantine in Italy goes.

Here's a question. Does the flight you used the credit on have to fly by one year out? Or can you purchase within a year for a flight that is maybe 16 months out?

For example: If I know I want to fly in June of 2021 but get the credit today, could I purchase the tickets in, lets say, Jan 2021?
