My parents have taken my brother & I out of school many times (I was in middle school while he was an upperclassmen in high school when we first began going) to go on vacation. The first time we went to Disney while I was in High School was in September '07 (I'm a Junior). Most of my teachers gave me the work that I would have missed ahead of time, so I was all set when it was time to leave. I missed a week of school and my grades didn't suffer a bit.
Like everyone else has stated, it's merely a matter of personal choice/opinion. If your child knows they can get the work done before hand and has an "okay" from the teachers that he/she won't be missing much, then I'd say go for it.

once school is out, and i missed a week of school to go up to tennessee on vacation at the end of september of 2007 and i found it easy to get caught up.
