Im really nervous!!
Tell me this is better/easier than I think it will be? ok maybe thats asking a bit much, I just need some reassurance. Im scared half to death.

Thanks I appreciate it :)

Don't worry about it.

Just think about the perfect smile you'll soon have!

Have you had your 'molds' made yet? That, IMO, was the worst part of braces entirely.

The best part? My teeth were so loose (i had the kind that loosened your whole mouth - never had to get them 'tightened') that i couldn't eat alot of foods that I liked - so I lost weight.

Don't be stressed though...

It is better and easier. I was shocked how quick dd's went on and how fast they came off. Just remember to take some ibuprofen about an hour BEFORE you go in. It will help with any swelling and pain and keep on top of it for the first day.

Same with when you go for tightening - take some ibuprofen about an hour BEFORE you go. DD said that was the best thing she ever did - and one time she forgot and she paid for it!

yes the molds were done last week, thast the worst of it? That was easy :) She dried them really well first so they werent all gooey.

Thanks, Im trying to relax about it.

I bet I lose a bunch of weight too ( which wouldnt hurt me one little bit! lol )

If I made it through braces anyone can. I have the worst gag reflexes in the world and NO pain tolerance. And they felt that I went through with flying colors-or at least that's what they told my parents. And this guy tells nothing but the truth.
They're really not bad at all. I had them for just over 2 years, am still in retainers-till my mid 20's.
Good luck with them, but I'm sure it'll be fine.

If you have any trouble at all, just remember that each day that goes by the problems decrease. Good luck. I bet it will go just fine:D

I admire you. I wish that my parents had made me when I was young. I just don't have the self confidence to be an adult with braces.

I'm 31 and I have had mine on for a year. I think waiting until I was older was better because I know that I wouldn't have had the dicipline to keep them up when I was younger. I thought the worst thing ever were the spacers. Those are what go on before the brackets to make space and to make it easier for them to go on. Those were the all time worse. After a month you should feel like you don't even notice them as much. But after each rewire some teeth just feel pressure, kind of like you have a loose tooth. It's not bad and hopefully time will fly by. Just make sure you do everything they tell you like floss and mouthwash. They prescribed me some mouthwash but it was like $14 and I asked them of any alternatives and they said Act. It has something to do with no alcohol I think. Good Luck.

You'll definitely lose weight and you will be fine. Any discomfort you may have will be worth it in the end. I remember I didn't want braces (I was 12) and my parents pretty much forced me and I'm so glad they did, because they could have easily said no since we didn't have a lot of money. I definitely give you credit doing this as an adult, I know it must be hard, but the fact you are doing this as an adult means you want this and it will make it that much easier. Good luck:D

I'm an adult with braces... my parents couldn't afford them, so I bought them for myself. My confidence has sky rocketed, even WITH the braces on.

I've had mine about 3 years and counting...

Take an Advil before you go in, about 30 min or so, that will help with teh soreness. Be prepared to eat soft foods for a few days, I ate mashed potatos and oatmeal =) It gets easier as you get used to the feeling and your mouth builds up callouses. I used the wax alot at first, because it cut into my mouth, but now they're used to them being there.

It's really not bad - and so worth it! The WORST part was writing those payment checks each month ;)

I got clear on top, metal on bottom. What are you getting?

I am also an adult (34 years old) in full ceramic braces. When I was a kid, my parents never thought a smile was important and refused to pay for braces. So now as an adult I am paying for them with my savings. I had them a little over a year, with almost two more years until I get them off. But it's all worth it, as I already feel much better about myself, and I can finally stop feeling like Quasimodo! :teeth: I can't emphasize enough how important a smile is to your self-esteem. I am hoping more doors open for me - professionally and personally - when I get the braces off and have the "perfect" Hollywood smile!

At first when the brace go on, you will probably have a "what did I do to myself?" feeling. You will have torn-up spots on the inside of your mouth, and biting into a sandwich - forget it!!! I ate only yogurt and soup the first few days. And just wait for the wonderful rubberband phase (which I will start soon!)! Braces can be a tough adjustment at first, but then you get used to them, and after a few months you don't focus much on them at all. And it's neat to see some progress when your teeth start improving. It is all worth it! :)

The website archwired.com is GREAT for adults in braces - I post there sometimes. :) GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

i had braces in 5th grade....im with everyone on taking the advil BEFORE you go..and eating the mashed potatoes, applesauce, jello, soup blah blah....
and if you seem to be talking funny the first day ( i dunno if everyone does, but i defintely did..talk as much as you can!!..it will get you used to it

well theyre on!
It wasnt that bad but they said it would start hurting in a few hours.
It wasnt as bad as I thought it would be and they dont look too terrible. The top ones are clear so you can hardly see them so thats nice.

Anyway, thanks for the good wishes and ideas! Ill definately check back on this thread for more ideas!

omg - my poor middle school teachers.

nothing like talking to them and having a rubberband snap and go flying out your mouth mid-sentence!

way to go!
definetly use the wax if you have it if you cut up your mouth alot. and yes, you may have to peel your lips away from your teeth in the morning - but keep telling yourself you're doing this for a beautiful smile!

I had braces for three years when I was 30. Another thing I couldn't live without, especially in the beginning, was Anbesol, the liquid used for teething pain in babies. It numbed the pain when the inside of my mouth was irritated. There was a bottle in my purse at all times.

It is worth it. My parents couldn't afford it when I was a kid, so that was my "turning 30 crisis" thing, instead of a sports car.
