Take Passport at Ports?

I always bring ours with me, but I never leave them behind anywhere I travel.

I'm one of those who takes it with me whenever I'm in a foreign country. Some years ago I witnessed a crime in Sweden. The police wanted to see my passport, which I had with me. I was interviewed and allowed to continue on my business. Another witness was held by the police for about 3 hours until they could get his passport from his hotel room safe. Since then I keep my passport with me.

I take mine with me. Being able to get back into the port area is my least concern, the passport is the world-wide recognized identification, and if it's not with me, it's not very good identification.

Yes, for Mexico and the Caribbean ports, they have reciprocal agreements that a US driver's license is valid identification, but, I want there to be no misunderstandings whatsoever, if I'm in a situation where an authority in a foreign country needs to see my identification, I want the one that is the strongest US identification that I have, which is my passport and I take the same precautions with it that I do with my phone/wallet/etc.

Thanks for the clarification. Our last cruise was the Bahamas and we knew the rule for closed-loop, but I didn't know if Mexican debarkation would require a passport for the littles. We typically carry them during all foreign travel, but dragged our feet with the baby and booked this cruise very last minute. Much appreciated!

As far as I know, on modern cruiselines, they make sure you have all the ID you need for all the ports. No one has to stay on the ship because they don't have the right documentation; the cruises make sure you have that.

This doesn't include things like the railroad tour back into Canada from Skagway, or jumping to a different island nation from the port of call you are at in the Caribbean, but the ports that are actually part of the cruise.

So if your cruise allows BCs, then they aren't stopping anywhere that requires passports.

On our Mediterranean cruise, I'm pretty sure that I had our passports with us in a security belt (one of those hidden waist pouches). To get on and off of the ship, we had our KTTW cards and U.S. passport cards for ID.

On our last Caribbean cruise, I asked about passports, and was told by Guest Services and the Port Adventure personnel to just take a copy of our passports off the ship. (We also had our KTTW cards and U.S. passport cards for ID.)
