We will be on the sept.25th magic, and i was wondering how tablemates are assigned?? do u find out at your first dinner or before hand , is it just a random thing, seems like you can be seated with just a couple of other people or a whole table full of other cruisers, i kind of feel like a dope for asking this

Seems to be pretty random unless you are sailing with friends or family and ask for your reservations to be linked. In 39 cruises, most of which we have not been sailing with other people, we have had excellent luck with table mates. As a matter of fact, on #38, we all got along so well that on the nights each group of table mates went to Palo, they came to the regular dinner too, just to socialize! We've had children and teens at our table on occasion, and they have always been well behaved and delightful. We ate with one little three year old girl who had the manners of a princess. We only had an unfriendly person at our table once. There was a gay couple sitting with us on that trip, too, so I never figured out whether that offended her or whether she was just unfriendly in general. I think it was the latter, as her adult daughter was a very nice, sociable person. Meeting new table mates is part of the fun of cruising.

wait a minute! Last year we sat alone! Just the 4 of us. I thought that you sat with who you came on board with.

How do I book a party table so that I can talk to more than just the other 3 who I'll see all week?:chat:

I wasn't even aware that you could be assigned to eat with others. We have sailed three times with a group of four each time and we always sat a table that seated four.

I was surprised to hear that DCL would sit you with other people. Don't get me wrong, I am a people person and this wouldn't be a problem, I was just surprised.

I think they try to match you up as families or adults only. We (family of 3) sat with a family of 5 at a table for 8. That family had 2 girls and one boy, the girls were 8and 6, My son was 6 and the little boy was 2. They kids got along great and the parents were a lot of fun.

We have done three cruises, two with DC, and have been seated with others each time. It has always been wonderful and are looking forward to meeting the next family when we cruise again. :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce:

We sat at a table for four people.

Two were fairly decent, but two could be a pain.

Everyone at the table was in my family, so I really couldn't complain.

Chap.....we are also on the 9/25 Magic. Hubby and I are sailing without the kids this time and wanted to sit with people we new at least virtually instead of complete strangers......we met some other folks on the 9/25 cruise meet thread and we linked our ressies for dining.

If there are people you know you want to sit with you must call DCL and give them the other people's reservation number and your ressies can be linked so you will dine together. You can also do this as soon as you get onboard. We met a wonderful couple in the boarding line this past Feb and knew right there and then that we would all get along so we got onboard and got a table together!!! It was a great week with our new friends!!

As I said I would rather dine with people I know from these boards than complete strangers......just my comfort zone.

Here is a link to the cruise meet thread for 9/25 if you have not seen it yet...

I don't know how tablemates are assigned; but I don't think it is random. On our cruise last May (our first) we were assigned a table with 3 other couples travelling without children and we were all DVC members. We were delighted with their company! I hope your experience is as enjoyable as ours was.

On our first Disney Cruise, our group of four adults and a 4 year old was supposed to be seated with three other people, but they never showed up at our table. The server thought they had either decided not to eat at their seating or had their time changed, but we never found out.

On our next cruise, we've already had our seating linked to the same friends, and as more friends join us (two more said they might be going tonight!) they're going to be linked to. Slowly, we shall take over (insert evil laugh here).

We are a family of four that was seated with another family of four. We found out the first night when we walked in the dining room and found a table for eight - a few minutes later they joined us.

I don't know if it was random or not, but we had enough in common. Our kids were about the same age. We were all from the Midwest. We were about the same age. We were in the same cabin category.

They were very nice people, perfectly pleasant. We don't exchange Christmas cards or anything, but it was easy to talk to them for four nights.

jim, to funny!
made me laugh out loud at my desk. now getting strange looks(but hey, thats nothing new)

I dont know how they choose who sits with who, our first night on our table of 8 this year my daughter(14) was the only child, we had late seating, all of the other guests were lovley but I did feel a bit sorry for my daughter as she felt as though she could not join in the conversations. She really did not feel like going to dinner the 2nd night but as it happened although we were on the same table we had a new cruiser join us with his teenage son(dont know what happened to the other couple) then on the 3rd night we had a completly different couple join us. I am presuming prehaps the other adults went to Palos.

 :wave2:

We requested to be seated alone as our own family of 5 but that request was not granted and we were seated with another couple and a little girl who was 6. I was kind of disappointed as we really don't like eating with people we don't know. By the end of the cruise it was ok but the first few nights were REALLY awkward and uncomfortable for all of us.

If they had to seat us with someone I wish they would have put us with a family with kids more our kids ages.

Definitely go to the cruise meet board to find out who is on board and hook up with similar families. Barbara (Mom2Belle&Peter) and I "talked" alot before the cruise, we hooked up and we had a great time. It was so much fun to meet them. I felt like we had known them forever!!!

We both had teen boys. She also had a daughter. They had the REAS package and Debbie had some pull. Barbara requested a family with a girl the same age as her daughter. And viola! there they were on the first night!!!

What I've learned on 10 cruises---
They TRY to meet requests. If you ask to dine with just your family, they make a real effort to do that.

If you don't ask, it goes by how their table arrangements work out. They have tables for 4 and up. We have been seated (just 2 of us) at a table alone. We were also seated with a group of 16 others, but they did ask us before they did this--it was a lovely family, and DD enjoyed being the "big sister."

On another occasion, we were seated with 3 other groups of 2 at a table for 8--all ladies/teen girls. Another time, it was a family of 3 with daughter about same age as mine.

It isn't random. They try to match kid ages as best they can (although the older ones sometimes get counted as adults. My DD was 12 when we were with a grandmother and 17 year old as well as 2 sets of adult sisters for a total of 8.

If you are seated with someone (other than your family) and it isn't working out, just tell the head server. He will have you moved for the rest of the cruise.

If you want to be with someone, the key is to have your ressies "linked." That's DCL talk for "we want to eat together."
