Cast:
Tabetha: Disney fan who came to the "World" late in life, and am now making up for it! This is my second trip on property, last year we stayed at Pop Centruy with my sister.
Greg: Disney fan who has been to the "World" pretty much every year for the last 15 years. Has seen it all, and is starting to see a little tarnish on the magic. Has been his lifelong dream to stay at the Polynesian.
We've been dating for over a year now, and this is our first "alone trip"!
02/12/05 Day Zero: Shuffling off to Buffalo literally
Oh Disney Countdown clock. Do my eyes betray me? Could it be true? Has the appointed hour finally come?
Well sort of. Much like the little kids in the Disney commercial, Im too excited to sleeeeep, and wake up repeatedly through the night. Finally, I give up at 7:30, and get up to do some tidying and last minute packing, and a quick check of the DIS. Greg arrives later, and we head to a local haunt to enjoy a delicious, albeit fidgety (Im to excited to eeeeeeeat) birthday brunch with my sister and her friends. We smoke it home to do a last minute dog walk and tidy up while she walks home with her friends to treat them to cheesy fondue and cheesy old sci-fi movies. Im getting out just in time! Let the nerdification of the house begin! I know that while Im gone, the TV will be stuck on the Space Channel and DVDs of Wagners Ring Cycle the entire time. She watches the Wagner operas with German subtitles so that she can learn to recognise the lyrics and maybe learn a little German in time to see the operas performed live at the opening of Torontos new opera house next year. Enjoy, sis!
We sneak out while Scooter the dog is distracted by the incoming company, and hit the open road!!
Well, for 20 minutes. We stop by to say good-bye to Gregs parents on our way out of the city. Ok, another half an hour, and we hit the open road!!
For five minutes. We have to go through a car wash. Im not sure why, but Gregs dad and Greg have both agreed that the car would make the trip better if it were clean. Ok. Whatever. Its almost like a ride inside the carwash. I imagine Im at Epcot. This is the car wash of the fuuuuutuuuure! This type of clean cannot be achieved with todays conventional soap and water. Are we out yet? Yes! Good! We hit the open road!!
Seriously? We need gas now? But open road ? Hello?
Finally! Open road! We make good time to Buffalo, which is surprising, since were not really sure exactly how to get where were going. We get through customs without a hitch, scope out the duty free for any champagne (PS: duty free that we went to, you suck). We get a map from information, and easily find our hotel Four Points Sheraton. Conveniently located right next to the Walden Galleria Mall. We check out our room. Yup, four walls, floor, shower, bed. Its a room all right. Nice is a relative term, but relatively speaking, this room is nice. Ok, Nice-ish. But for $88 for the night and two weeks worth of parking included, I aint complaining. We get to the room, and this Gregs first indication that I dont like to rest on vacation. He wants to relax for 20 minutes. I want to go go go. Lets go eat! I grudgingly let him relax, since he drove.
After his requisite rest period, we decide to seek out dinner. We were given directions to the nearest Cracker Barrel by the front desk, and we set off. The wrong way. The front desk kid told us to go East when we should have gone West. On a toll road. Seriously, thats 70 cents and half an hour well never see again. We enjoy our visit to the Cracker Barrel, and bring half of our meals back to the hotel for a midnight snack. Next time well remember utensils. Polishing off cold mashed potatoes with no fork is not a sexy sight.
We stop by Target so I can pick up flip flops and sunglasses, and Greg buys some more DVDs for the flight. Im not sure if he thinks were crossing the Atlantic, since we now have about 20 hours worth of entertainment, but he wanted them, so who am I to say otherwise?
Later, we stop at the Walden Galleria Mall because Greg needs new sneakers. We go to every store that sells athletic shoes. I begin to understand the despair felt by men when accompanying their female companions on shopping safaris. Finally, in JC Penny we find a pair that are comfortable, both in fit and in cost. Thank you New Balance.
We get back to the hotel, unsexily finish our cold fried food, set the alarm clock for 5AM, and turn in. We are finally sort of on our way!
