hi. we are considering EBTA next year (more southern route).I just read that for 5 days, the EBTA was not allowed on decks 4, 10 and only limited time on deck 9. Is this normal? Are seas that rough? We assumed we would be able to sit by the pool on sea days. I understand you can't if there is a weather front, storms, but I didn't think this was the norm for TA? Maybe someone from WBTA could comment on past southern routes?

Don't know about the EBTA, but we have been on other cruises where they have closed off either all or one side of deck 4 due to weather. Those have only been for brief periods.

Believe me, you would not have wanted to sit by the pool on those days. It was so incredibly windy that wind chill was awful.

In 2010 I only had one day on deck 4 because of the high waves out of a 7 day cruise in November. Also lost a few days on decks 9 & 10 that week.

Just off the EBTA, and yes we had extremely rough seas (25 foot waves) for 4 days. And it was very cold for most of the trip (beginning in Boston). The daily temperature didn't go above 56 degrees most days.

The doors to deck 4 outside were blocked most of that time due to the wind coming from that side (hitting the ship broadside). You could go out on the starboard side (if you really wanted to). And we had no issues when we wound up having to transverse deck 9 from mid ship to port (by mistake actually). Can't address as to whether deck 10 was totally closed or not, as I really tried not to be outside on this cruise.

A big risk you take on a EBTA

The North Atlantic can be a moody Lady. Some trips, she can be calm and inviting......smooth as glass. Other trips she kicks up her heels and raises Cane. Granted she's generally rougher in winter months, but it can happen at any time of the year.

Exactly! We've been fortunate with our EBTA sailings in 2013 and 2014. We had great weather and spent the majority of our sea days in lounge chairs by the pool. Anyone who considers a TA crossing needs to be prepared for anything. If you're not you can have a very disappointing cruise.

Correct. And anyone who immediately discounts a cruise just because "the weather is always that way" on any given cruise will miss a lot of great cruises.

They closed Deck 4 a lot and the pools when we were on the rough seas on the Magic of 4/17 eastern carribean. The adults pool stayed open but the kids pool had to keep closing temporarily which was understood because the waves in the kiddie pool were really dangerous

Any chance you will do a trip report? :-) What about people with veranda rooms, were they able to use them?

I would imagine those with verandahs were able to use them (if they didn't mind the cold and wind). I don't know if they were informed not to use them.

Have only just returned, so I'm not sure about a full report. I may write a little post about the cruise, though.

My tablemates were in a verandah room and they made no mention of being told not to use them. Since the verandah rooms don't start until deck 5 and technically only have one face to open air, I don't see why there would have been any issue. The only rooms I heard of having "use" issues with staterooms were those in ocean view rooms on deck 1 with the smaller portholes. Protective covers were screwed over their portholes on the inside when things started kicking up and not removed until the seas calmed down.

I'm not undestanding the "risk" with EBTA for next year if it is taking the southern route. Maybe from the Azores to N. Europe, yes, but aren't the 6 days PtC to Azores the same route as the WBTA usually takes? And, wouldn't May typically be as calm as the fall?

Glad you're back safe and sound! I'll be sending you a PM soon as I would like to pick your brain a little on the B2B Mexico cruises we just booked for October 2017. I hope you enjoyed the cruise.
