We've now decided that while we want to try a new resort we also want to stay somewhere we love WL. While the plans are still up in the air we are looking at AKL or CR first and then switching to WL after a couple days.

Anyone with any experience doing this? Will we miss out on time during our trip due to having to check in/out/and back in a new resort? Also at WL we got a great room double upgrade and checked in about 1pm on a Sunday. Will we still have a chance for a good room checking in during the middle of the week and later/earlier in the day?

BTW - There are 2 adults and 1 child and the time is mid July 2005.

Thank you for any help on this.

We switched midtrip on October from WL to the Poly, because the Poly was going to be cheaper for the last two nights of our trip with a code than the same room we were ALREADY IN at WL  Our WL CV room was going up over $100 a night for Friday and Saturday night and no codes available then but the Poly had a GV code of $239. We were advised by CR to go ahead and check out of the WL early that morning and head over to the Poly calling the night before to tell them that we were coming and were already on site. BIG MISTAKE! We arrived at the Poly at 11:30, no room. Checked in and went to DTD, kept checking back, no room. Arrived back at Poly at 2:30 no room , 3PM (official check in) No room, (ours was the only one in the entire bldg not ready :( Finally a manager went over to find out the hold up...............they cleaned our carpet  Wouldn't have been so bad if we hadn't had tickets for the Halloween Party and kdis needed to change and we had a PS at Ohana for 5:30. Finally got in our room and dashed off to dinner. My advise, if you're going to do it, let Disney handle moving every thing and getting your luggage to your room for you. Just check out that morning and go to the parks, let them handle your transfer. That part stressed DH so much that he actually wound up throwing up after our Ohana dinner :( aand he's not easily stressed. I think the worst part was we did what CR told us to do. Now I realize that they were actually just trying to get us out of our room early. If you could swing it I'd recommend CR for ease of commute to the MK.

I will agree, let Disney handle the transfer of luggage, especially if you don't have a car. It will take several hours, but if you plan that day to be a park day, then it won't matter.

This past Oct we checked out of Wilderness Lodge (had Disney handle the bigger luggage), checked into Caribbean Beach and went off for a day at SeaWorld.

This Aug on a Sun DS & I are checking out of WL, having Disney handle our luggage, checking into Beach Club Villas and spending time at EpCot. We can check back a few times to see if our room is ready. I didnt think of calling them to alert them that we are already on property.

The way we do our days at Disney, we are up early to visit the park-of-the-day. Then we're usually back to the room in the afternoon to rest/swim etc. Then back out to another park and/or dinner early evening.

This year will be the first year we try switching resorts, but I don't think it will take any time away from our "park-time" If I recall correctly, they offer a type of express check-out on your departure day - if all the room charges are correct on the print out they provide you under your door, then you don't have to go to the desk to check out.

My plan for this year is to get up early - as usual - check the room charge print out. Make sure all my room charges are correct for resort 1. Load my luggage into my car (we'll be driving. If you are not driving, check these boards on tips for getting Disney to transfer your luggage.) Take the bus to the park-of-the-day. Come back to resort 1 at our usual break time, drive to resort 2 and check in. Take the rest of our break time to either explore resort 2 and/or swim. Head back to the park or dinner at the same time we would have if we had just stayed in one resort.

I have a question about this topic. Our last trip we switched from Poly to the Dolphin, but we had our car. Our Mommy & me & me trip we will be going from the Pop to AKL. Will the value resorts transfer luggage? We do not have a car this trip so EVERYTHING will need to be taken over by Disney.

And in March (same as last July) with a cruise we are really switching around. 2 nites PORS std room (hoping for alligator) then Wonder cruise, the return to PORS h20 view (hoping for manisons), then moving to Poly for the bulk of trip. This is a lot of moving but we probably will have a separate bag packed for the 1st part through cruise and then will not truely unpack till move to poly. BUT we always rent a car, makes it much easier, give the bags to bellman at Poly and they will hold till we are in the room. If we didn't have the car, I would just use a cab for the short ride over. ;) That would be much easier, and give the bellmen my luggage, that way if your room is ready (and many times at the poly it has been), you are ready to check in. If disney moves your luggage you have to wait till the evening to get it, and the bellmen still bring it to you, when your in the room.

I prefer switching cause we stay down for an extended amount of time (over 18 nites) that much time in 1 or even 2 resorts gets dull and we like to move around. Feels like a "new" disney vacation when you are in a new room. :teeth: Even just changing rooms in the same resort is worth it. You get a different persective.

Have a great trip, Good weather, magical vacation! Mky princess:

Thank you all for posting about your experiences. We will have a car so that won't be an issue for us. However, have you ever had an problems getting your luggage from the bellman later in the day? Also is it put in a secure location where it cannot be tampered with? Also, are you considered checked into the resort if your room is not ready? We like to use the pools during the middle of the day when it is hot so if the room isn't ready till after 3 will we still be able to use the new pool before that?

Sorry for all the questions but we want to make the right choice. We are trying to decide if it is worth the trouble to try a new resort during our trip which will likley be 6 or 7 days.

Thank you!

fam4jc, we had to switch from one value resort to another once, was our first time, had never heard of this service, was a bit nervous - they moved our considerable luggage without a problem but I feel so badly cause, in the confusion, I forgot to leave a tip for them. I will never make that mistake again. Will make a new one though, I am sure.

Each resort has a locked luggage room for people who want to leave their luggage, either when they check in before their room is ready, or after they check out before they leave Disney.
If you check in to the resort and get your KTTW cards, I would say you are checked in and should have no problem using the pool. Just take bathing suits with you, since access to your luggage while it's in the locked luggage room is often a hassle. I don't know if towels are available at the pool, hopefully someone else can chime in here.
