Switching Resorts: A wise move methinks.

A few days ago I changed the resort for my upcoming solo visit to Walt Disney Resort. Part of the reason for the change was because of posts here on this site; people were telling about how they received up to a 40% discount on their room rate. Talk of "codes," hidden numbers next to their names on Disney computers, post cards sent to some people but not to others, and other accounts of nice discounts led me to believe that I too could perhaps recieve a break on the steep rack rate at the resort I had picked for my upcoming December trip.

So, on January 5, 2007, I made a reservation for a room at the Contemporary Resort, Tower, with a Magic Kingdom view, for five nights beginning on Monday, Dec. 10, 2007. When I made the reservation the CM on the phone quoted a rate of $443.38 per night; I assumed that the rate would go down during the year as codes and cards were issued.

Last week I called again, and was advised that no discounts were to be had, in spite of the fact that I was: a Florida resident, a Disney Visa card holder, an AAA member and an annual passholder, with many years of visiting WDW.

I decided to cancel this year's trip to WDW altogether.

But, just for the heck of it, I went onto the Disney website and found to my surprise that I could book a room at the French Quarter, even though it was only 60 days before my hoped for trip. Not knowing if I could reserve a room while already holding a reservation, I made the attempt and was successful.

With a new confirmation number on hand, I called the WDW reservation number again, explained that I wanted to switch reservations, canceled the CR room, and, having canceled it, asked if there were any discounts possible on the French Quarter room, which I had reserved at $190.00 per night. The CM said, yes there was a Florida Resident discount, but she would have to cancel the reservation I had made online, and make a new one; I also added one night to my stay, arriving on Sunday, Dec. 9, instead of the Dec. 10 arrival I planned earlier.

While on the line, I also canceled all of my meal reservations, and made new ones based upon my location and revamped park plans. I got every reservation I requested but one.

The end result ...

5 nights at the Conemporary, $2,216.90 (including tax).
6 nights at the French Quarter, $742.50 (including tax).

AN EXTRA DAY AT WALT DISNEY WORLD, with a savings of $1,474.40.

Now that's magic MY way!

Wow, I would say that was a very wise move. Great job at being able to get such a discount and almost all your ADR's.

Congrats - you will love POFQ.
It's a bus to everywhere, but DTD (boat) - but it is the 1st bus stop.
POFQ is our choice for a moderate (if we ever do one)

The savings will be appreciated by you, your family and your wallet.

Please have a magical vacation and sprinkle some pixie dust on others.

:tinker: We have offered individual packaged wipes to Moms with a sticky child, we have givem up seats on the bus and monorail for those who need a seat, we have given away valid, current, still good 4 FP's to families of 4, for such rides as Splash Mountain, Mt Everest and even Soarin:tinker:

fantastic! Lucky you :thumbsup2 I loved POFQ when I stayed there last year.

What a good deal! It has me thinking, too. I have a solo trip coming up to AK and just got back from the BC where I spent a lot on the rooms. Yet I love POR - I may change also.

Congrats - you will love POFQ.

Yes, I have stayed at the French Quarter several times in the past; I especially enjoy the River View rooms.

One of the reasons I wanted to stay at the Contemporary in the first place was the monorail access. But with a savings of $1,474.40, I probably won't hesitate one second to grab a cab whenever the mood strikes.

I'm also very likely to be an excellent tipper during my stay at WDW. :santa:

A taxi is especially nice after a long day at the park when there is a crowd waiting for a bus.

Congrats on the savings! I often toy with the idea of a solo trip to WDW but end up not going because it is sooo expensive. I've only been a few times and stayed at the deluxe resorts. I'd love to know your experience at POFQ, (it is the moderate that appeals to me)...it would be nice to go more often than once every 15 months or so....
