LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Disney is mounting a remake of its 1960 family film "Swiss Family Robinson," which starred John Mills and Dorothy McGuire.

According to sources, the new project will be set in its original time period, around the beginning of the 19th century. The script will be written by Greg Poirier, whose credits include "Rosewood," "Gossip" and "See Spot Run."

The classic story, which first originated as a novel by Johann David Wyss, finds the Robinson family washed ashore on an uncharted tropical island following a stormy shipwreck. On the island, the family builds a home in a gigantic tree, making a new life while battling the island's elements.

The story also has surfaced in more than a dozen other "Robinson" films and TV shows as well as serving as the inspiration for a Disney theme park attraction.

SFR is still one of my all-time favorite Disney movies (maybe even my very favorite). I really hope they do it justice, because the first one was done so well.

Of course, they did an excellent remake of the Parent Trap. So I'll hope for the best.

Interesting, thanks! I am also a huge SFR fan, and I've gotten my boys into it as well. We've watched that DVD many, many times! :)

As long as it doesn't star Jim Carrey and Steve Martin, and they don't try to make it into a wacky Gilligan's Island-style comedy, we'll probably be okay. If they can give it a Pirates of the Caribbean-like feel -- that kind of fun and detail and character -- then it could be great!

Looking at who the script will be written by makes me wary. All of those movies he wrote sucked big time.
Maybe since he has a actual storyline to work with-it will be better.

Hmmm....maybe now they will fix the waterwheel at the SFR Treehouse at WDW!!!
