Swiss Army Knife in the parks?

I carry my leatherman into the parks every time I go. It's a tool not a weapon.

As for why I need/want it? I use a wheelchair to get around and having a pair of pliers/screwdrivers/scissors/knife etc often comes in handy for quick wheelchair repairs in addition to all of the other reasons mentioned.

We've never had an issue at WDW however, we have had my mom's little keychain knive/scissors etc. confiscated at Disneyland-we threw it in the trash.( The blade was about 1" long). We had gone in many times before with one and no problem but this time the CM saw it and said-no-can't take it in. We trashed it instead of going back to the car. Now, I try to remember to remove mine from the key ring when going into any park. However, if I do forget, I find putting it in my pocket has never been a problem.

And as to why to carry one (small, not large)? We use it all the time to cut the straws (with the scissors) for my DD6. And yes it also comes in handy when opening those toy packages.

Most of the time, however, I do leave it at home. I don't really miss it and I find that even those plastic knives can cut the straws.

What could possilby happen if someone brought in a knife?

The reason they don't allow them on PLANES is that they can be used to threaten and disable the FLIGHT CREW... which could spell disaster for the entire plane.

On the ground, a threat with a knife (while quite serious) could not constitute a "threat on the masses".

A "good sharp stick" could be used for the same thing as well as a camera slung from it's straps used as a "mace."

The perp could quickly be subdued by a group of civil-minded by-standers.
That's not a plan that terrorists would devise.

The idea of MASS DESTRUCTION in a large public venue instigated with a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife or Leatherman is rather low on the scale.

What is security looking for?
Whatever it IS, its not a pocket knife.

This is where you can tell who grew up in a "country" area and who didn't. Knives are usaully used as tools; they can be used for almost anything! To only consider knives as a weapon would be the saying that you cut your steak with a weapon, doesn't sound right does it? Anything can be used as a weapon, from a shoe to a car, so why won't we have a rule at WDW that you can not bring anything in and make it a nudist camp? That way you would have no worries of a "weapon" coming into the parks.

Now what they should do is a blade size limit, that way your standard pocket knives that a lot of men carry everyday could come in, but larger, hunting knives could not.

Well....I grew up in the country with my father being a hunter, true they can be used for almost anything, taking them to WDW or on an airplane (packed in your luggage is one thing) seems kind of strange to me. I don't bring my kitchen (steak) knives with me when I go out. Like I said earlier, I don't make the rules, but it does happen to be a rule .....whether it is enforced properly or not. I wonder what the security people would say if someone asked them if they could bring in a knife???

They'd say no of course.

But then I could always go get a really big and sharp steak knife at any of the Disney sit down restaurants. The blades on those are much bigger and more dangerous then my leatherman's 3 inch blade. So from now on they should only use plastic knives at all Disney restaurants.

This reminds me of one of the stupid rules at my work. They won't allow people to bring scissors into the building here. But one of the first things they do when you become employed here is issue you a desk with office supplies which of course includes a pair of scissors...

Honestly, I wouldn't take it in the parks. What do you need the tools for anyways? You are on vacation!

I don't know what Disney's guest policy is, but I know that the cast members aren't allowed to carry them.

let's see... pick my teeth, trim a nosehair, peel an apple (with the same knife, yum), cut open a package, cut my food since plastic knives are no good, cut a tag off a new hat, tighten a screw on my sunglasses, lock my disney pins on my lanyard, be the hero when someone says "Does anyone have a pair of scissors?", pull a splinter out, etc.

I saw a gentleman offer 2 CM who were setting up for the parade the use of his pocket knife. After he walked away the one asked the other how he could have gotten that into the park. Um, pockets? Maybe it was the kind that can be carried on a belt?

Either way, neither of the CMs confiscated it or called anyone over.

I have carried my Swiss Army Knife into the parks many times. Like others have said, it's a tool and it's always with me. When I'm at my FL house, I'm always doing something that I may use it and it's always on my belt in it's case. I really don't think about it until I need it and then the automatic reaction is to reach for it.

I have only been stopped once entering the parks and after the security guard saw what it was, he just asked me to please put it in my pocket.

I have never made a big deal of it and I don't think that Disney will too.


Anyone ever needed help opening a Capri Sun? Those straws don't always work.

I have been carrying a swiss army knife for the past 27 years, and I use multiple times every day. Never once in all those years have I ever used it to hurt anyone, anything or any animal (with the exception of unintentionaly cutting myself). I don't take it on vacation with me just because I don't want to end up at the airport coming home and mistakenly not pack it in my luggage and have to have it confiscated. I miss it every day that I don't have it.

There have been many times when us "knife weilding maruaders " have used our trusty knives to get some un-prepard person out of a pickle. Just because it has a blade does not make it a weapon, you can use just about any household item as a weapon. It's the way that a person uses the item that makes it a weapon.

People have used their hands before to kill other people.

It all goes back to the individual. Violent people can use anything as a weapon. Fortunately, most of us respect human life.

One time not long after 9/11, I was going through security and a guy in front of me had a swiss army knife. The female security guard said "it's a little big. I'll let you in this time but leave it at the hotel next time". Huh? The security lines are practically worthless. When I was there last weekend there was a security guard talking to someone at the same time he was shining his flashlight into my purse. He never even looked!

The OP simply wanted to know if this can be done. For 2 reasons I said No. One reason was from the website that I posted on top of this thread. The other reason is simply from my point of reference, one of the items WDW is looking for is knives being brought in their checkpoint. Thats all!

However, that no longer holds true. You cant bring oxygen tanks, lighters & hypodermic needles on board a plane, in carry on luggage. Yet you can surely bring these into the parks.

Would I bring a Swiss Army knife into WDW. NO! And not so much because it is a rule, but what a hassle if you do get caught! And it would be very uncomfortable to be pulled over with your kids standing there waiting to see Mickey.

Would I suggest to any readers on how to bring a knife into the park, on this or any board. NO!

I am SURE that 99.99% of the people who bring these into the parks, really mean absolutely no harm to anybody.

On Sept 10, 2001 Box cutters & small knives were considered "tools" by pretty much everyone. Who would of thought 5 individuals going on to a airplane with these, would cause so much damage.

My point is, You just never know anymore? Why risk it?

And as far as NO security at WDW...I wouldn't count them as having none! Part of security for any place holding thousands of people is keeping it on the hush! It's not what you see, it's what you dont see that makes it secure!

A lot of people carry a pocket knife without thinking about it. My DH always carries one with him, because he uses it to open boxes at work. He just throws it in with his wallet, keys etc... They don't however check your pockets at WDW, so he never had any reason for anyone to say anything to him.
However, one year we went to a park in Birmingham (Visionland) and they did make you empty your pockets. (even before 9-11) They did keep his knife at the front for him all day, and had it waiting for him when we left.

and Disney is no exception, now first let me say that it is not for protection, but it is stilla good size knife blade about 3 1/2 inches and I have never had a problem having it in my pocket when entering any Disney park.

If you see me standing outside a store next week, trying to get into the child and adult proof packaging that they put toys in, please stop by and offer to cut it open with your knife!!!! I hate how they put so much twisty ties and plastic into packaging and without a knife/scissors, I can barely get into them. And those of you with kids KNOW that you cannot WAIT until you are back in the hotel...THEY WANT THEM OPENED NOW!

My husband pretty much always carries a Swiss Army knife with him, and I have seen him and even asked him to use it on more occasions than I can count. But I can't say I have ever actually seen the knife blade. The one dh owns has like 20 tools...everything from an actual toothpick, to scissors, to a file, to a screw driver, to a pen! He has traveled many times into WDW parks with that tool and he has never had a problem.

Again, a pocketknife is not considered contraband anywhere but on an airplane (or in a school).

Its not a "terrorist weapon" because it can do so little damage to so few people.

A pocketknife MIGHT be "bad news" on a commercial airliner (not so much anymore, with heightened passenger awareness),
but it is of little threat in large public places where cutting a single person (or two) would not generate a "mass catastrophe".

I wouldn't want to be threatened by a knife, of course, but its not the kind of "weapon of mass destruction" that a terrorist group would use.

As discussed earlier, if a deranged person is out to do serious harm to another individual, a pocketknife (or lack thereof) would not be the determining factor.

they are looking for the knives that people carry into Six Flags parks the big machettes or Daniel Boone knives.
