Swine flu?

I'm sorry if this comes off as alarmist, as that's not my intention. There are confirmed cases in my area now, so its on the news here. (cue crisis music)

Anybody concerned about traveling to Disney as this appears to be spreading? Can any of you medical types tell us how we can best protect ourselves when in crowds like at Disney. Is it the same common sense measures as when we face Noro?

They are saying that if you are in an area of it being a bit outbreak (right now that's just Mexico) to stay home, don't kiss, stay out of crowds, etc. There hasn't been any outbreaks in Orlando that I've heard. The cases in the US have been from groups that traveled together to Mexico for Spring Break - mostly kids who have been in tight quarters.

Yes, no outbreaks in Orlando, but lots of people traveling there! Actually I guess a cast member would really be at risk since they come in contact with so many people from all over. I've already lectured my DD who is working at Cedar Point Amusement Park and living in a dorm there to wash those hands!

As far as I know it's not in FL - yet. It has gotten to the US though. TX, KS, and NY. My step-daughter lives on the outskirts of San Antonio, TX. She teaches at the local high school. They've shut her town down because of two cases. The TX Gov. mandated that for a week - no school, no church, no parks - everybody stay home. Very scary.

I live in San Antonio but I work in Universal City, which is one of the towns that have closed all the schools for a week at least. People are talking about it, but so far no one is panicked yet. They are saying to stay out of crowds and such. We just finished up Fiesta week here.(at least I think it's finished..I don't go to any Fiesta events) Three parades and a whole lot of crowds.

I was just mentioning this to DW last night.
We now have about 6 confirmed cases in Canada, some in British Columbia and some in Nova Scotia.
Now it is confirmed in Spain, with 1 confirmed and up to 20 suspected cases.
It is worriesome as our kids just don't get the whole 'Don't touch that railing" thing.
I asked Kath last night who we know that just came back from Mexico and she replied our neighbor
Good thing I haven't seen them yet.
We actually tossed around the idea of surgical gloves during rides etc, so they can be just tossed away after each ride, and have the handwash handy as well, for what little protection it gives.
I know, I know, perhaps a bit much, but getting sick pre cruise (we are there for 4 days) would be disasterous.
I imagine the screening for symptoms will be heightened before boarding the ship by the time we get there in 13 days.

And post cruise we have 7 more days to be uber-vigilant.

I stopped into Bath and Body Works yesterday and bought 5 little bottles of the antibacterial gel for us to use during the trip. I will also bring lysol wipes to wipe down our cabin before we touch anything! I don't want to get sick...but i'm not overly concerned about swine flu. I do this for every trip!

this is the best way to stop this bug (and MANY) more. I teach food safety, and that is the number 1 thing we can do to stay healthy, and kill pathogens.

as it turns out, my mom, sister, nephew and a few others coming for the wedding will be on two flights with passengers flying from mexico to europe (the connecting flights to europe)..

Northwest was actually sort of amusing when i called them to find out if there were any mexico city originating passengers on my mom's flight...

they said, "we can't give you that information, however we can say that we highly recommend that she wear a facemask on that flight and bring wet wipes to wipe everything down with"..

in other words, yes, there will be mexico-city originating passengers...

i have to say i laughed when i was told that (i suggested to them that my mom would come in a hazmat suit with gas mask)..

it's not funny that people are dying, but laughing is about all i can do..

my mom insists on flying, despite the risk...

hopefully all will be ok....

We were in Disney this past December with the Stomach Bug outbreak (and got it) and now SWINE FLU!!!! I am bringing every kind of antivirus wipe and gel possible...yeah, I am a bit worried with being around so many people who travel from all areas of the world to the World. I will be wiping down the kids, the hotel room, the rides, the kids....and washing hands like I have OCD. Wait...maybe I do

No, I will enjoy our vacation next week, but I will be very careful. I dont want to have December revisited this trip!

There is no substitute for common sense when it comes to hygiene.

1. Wash your hands.
2. Avoid sticking your hands on things that everyone else touches, because for some gross reason, they don't follow Rule#1.
3. After touching #3, wash your hands.
4. Think about the places that everyone touches and try to get creative with you use - buttons on elevators, hand holds on buses, salt and pepper shakers in restaurants, railings on stairs, etc.
5. Avoid those in the crowd who look like Typhoid Mary.
6. Drink Scotch to kill the germs in your mouth (ok, that doesn't really help, but it makes me feel better).

Every cough is a gentle mist of bugs. You can't completely avoid it, but you can be smart and safe and stand a reasonable chance of being healthy and happy.

Have a good dinner.

Nope not one bit at least if I die I'll be in the happiest place on Earth ....But seriously a high percentage of the Viruses we come in contact with come from Domesticated Animals anyway as long as you wash your hands and keep a decent distance away from people who are showing symptoms of sickness like one normally does there is little to no threat. We are all walking talking contagious ticking time bombs anyway, this virus is no different unless of course you catch it then your immune system/white blood cells will be on a roller coaster ride of their own. Which being that summer is right around the corner this Virus will not spread as easily in warm weather climates as airborne viruses do not like the heat and die or move at glacial paces. Now Northern Canada, Northern Europe and Northern China may be a different story as it tends to stay a bit cooler especially as you travel further away from the equator. Those are the places where the Virus has a fighting chance to make a huge impact. You know how our mother's told us to wear our jackets outside so we don't catch a cold? Well unfortunately they were wrong our core body temperature has no baring on whether we catch a virus for the colder it gets the faster and farther moving Viruses become and a little old wool hat isn't going to stop them.

I find the spread of Germs and disease simply fascinating did you know that there was only 1 yes 1 Virus in the "New World" prior to European contact? Simply fascinating....

I heard on the news this afternoon that there are now 13 minor cases of the swine flu in Ontario.
Yesterday there was 0.
I am assuming that some or all of these cases are from people who just got back from their Mexican vacations.
I have been talking to the boy's all afternoon about hand washing, and not putting there hands in their mouth.

How can anyone possibly know that? Those sorts of statments can't be proven or disproven. Did you know there were no six sided snow flakes before there were humans to count them?
