Swine Flu

I'm still chill about it.

Two of my close friends spent all of last week in Cancun and neither of them is showing symptoms of it.

The way some of the media is playing it up, they're making it sound like everybody is going to get it.

Im still not freaked

I think the media is overreacting a bit:rolleyes:

I agree, I think the media is having way too much fun making this as big of a deal as possible. All of the face masks have sold out from the CVS' around here, yet we have only 2 cases here. People are going crazy about it, and I really think they need to stay calm. Just do what people normally do, washing hands, cleaning areas where there is a large amount of people, and we should be just fine for the most part.

I don't care, this will easily be a pandemic within the next few days. I think everyone should take the necessary precautions, especially in schools. Everything spreads in school like wildfire.
You don't know how strong or weak the kids' immune systems are. You don't know how weak or strong their family members' immune systems are. If, God Forbid, my sister brings this home from school, I'm screwed.

Of course the media sensationalizes things - it's called yellow journalism.

my mom bought face masks today

just in case it spreads here so we are ready!

Why would they kill the pigs? That isn't going to stop the HUMAN form of this virus from spreading.

My moms friend is freaking out. She is like I am going to have to quit work and stuff. My mom is just buying us all LOTS of hand sanitizer and telling us to use it after we do anything. Today she made me hand sanitizer my cell phone cause I dropped it on the ground i think maybe she is overreacting but then again i don't want the flu either

I listened to an infectious disease dr on the radio today out of the NYU med school and he was saying that this pandemic isnt all what the media is making it out to be. If every influenza case was documented, then people would just as concerned as they are now.

But to be living in fear is totally rediculous!

Well in truth everybody has been making a big laugh out of it and joking about the masks and everything. At the moment there are only a few cases up in the North of Wales but once it reaches Swansea I think we're all going to crap ourselves. Honestly I don't want it and I most certainly don't feel like dying. I fail to see killing pigs as answer though:confused3

people in mexico shouldn't leave the country cuz if you have it you will give it to some 1 else and then they will pass it on ect... and no offence if you live in mexico

Whoah! It's officially a 5 now, 1 more 'til 6.
My mom said she's still going to Mexico.
I'm worried, but come on, what are the odds of my mom catching it? Besides, they might close the borders before she goes...she's leaving next Monday. It might already be a 6 by that time...
Oh & I think Indiana and Michigan have at least one case in each state, so next is...Illinois! So what better city to target than Chicago? ;)
It's bound to happen here anyway, O'Hare airport has hundreds of people coming from Mexico...so yeah, I'm expecting it.

I think the reasoning behind the raise has to do with the fact that WHO can enforce more restrictions/research/etc. At this point, I don't think it has very much to do with the fact that everyone who touches this is gonna die.

In fact MOST of the people who get it are still alive.. Only like ... at most 10 people have died from this, 36,000 people a YEAR die from REGULAR flu. The only difference is that we dont have a vaccine or cure for this one.. which is a BIG difference which is why it is at level 5.. Im not too worried, just be cautious. the CDC said it is unlikely to get it from touching a doornob after someone had it touched it, and that it spreads from people who are coughing and sneezing...just be SMART! :thumbsup2

I'm not that worried. Although, there's 8 cases in the UK now...

I just read this on Yahoo! news:

"Most people who get flu, even a new strain of flu, will make a good recovery. It's a nasty illness but it's short and they will recover."
"To put things in proportion, in any flu - even the seasonal flu - there are some deaths, often of elderly people and the very frail. What we will see is many more cases, but on the whole most people make a good recovery from flu."

This bit is a bit concerning, though:

Earlier, the Government's Chief Medical Officer predicted "many more cases" of swine flu in the UK but said most people will make a good recovery.

Most? eek.

I'm not really phased about it. Everytime I read something new about it, the facts have changed. Yesterday, I read a child had died from swine flu in the USA, and then today I read there was no deaths in the USA at the moment... Similarly on the way home from London, a newspaper front page said there was one confirmed case in the UK, then when I get home the number had risen to 5, and the first to be confirmed was the day before...

According to BBC News, there's more confirmed cases of swine flu in the USA, then in Mexico (including deaths)

6 people in my county have it right now...
Lots of people are freeking out apparently one of the teachers at one of the elementary schools has it...
They say if a student gets it the school will be shut down for 2 weeks...

Well, it's here. Supposedly a teacher at my high school has it.

Great.

its simple people!
Wash your hands and DONT LICK PIGS.
the media isnt helping the situation. there making it worse

I'm not particularly concerned anymore. I just can't even try to make myself concerned, everything is so normal here. I don't really hear about it unless I watch a news channel all day, or look for a thread on this.

Apparently it started because some dunce decided to have sex with pigs?
Correct me if I'm wrong, this is what I've been told...
